Marathon is testing a new experimental mode that's sounding a lot like a battle royale.

Game director Joe Ziegler took to X to share details about the next experimental mode - Dire Marsh Sponsored. The post included an overview of what to expect, and it seems like it's Marathon's way of implementing a battle royale-esque experience.

Here's everything we know about Dire Marsh Sponsored so far.

Marathon Tests Dire Marsh Sponsored Experimental Queue

From April 15 (10 AM PT) to April 29 (10 AM PT), Marathon will be running its new experimental queue, Dire Marsh Sponsored. In Ziegler's post, he explains that this mode will help both devs and players learn about early gear ecosystems.

Featuring the Dire Marsh map, only premade duos and trios (both premade or crew fill) can enter this mode. Additionally, you can only enter the queue if you (and your crew) have a free sponsored kit (white tier) equipped.

Unlike other Marathon modes, where you boost your loadout based on the items you successfully loot and exfil during Raids, everyone enters this queue on an even playing field and must fight with what they find on the map.

The premise sounds a lot like a battle royale, where players enter the game with nothing and must loot from the map to boost their chances of survival. However, Marathon has the additions that set it apart from the traditional battle royale genre through AI enemies and the PvE element.

So, is it a battle royale? Kind of. Perhaps at most, it's battle royale-inspired. This mode might be the answer to users seeking a less hardcore experience, becoming a queue perfect for casual players.
