Melinoe is a great main protagonist, but some fans are still wondering if you can play as Zagreus in Hades 2.
Supergiant Games’ first sequel as a studio hit all the right notes; it’s not only bigger, but bolder. Part of that boldness comes from the fact that they’ve opted to bring forth a newcomer as the face of Hades 2, the aforementioned Melinoe, a witch trained by Hecate tasked with bringing down the mighty Chronos, the Titan of Time.
So, does Zagreus get to help out Melinoe in Hades 2? Well, the answer might disappoint you. Beware, slight spoilers ahead.
Can You Play As Zagreus In Hades 2?
No, Zagreus is not a playable character in Hades 2.
I’ve finished the game and dove deep into the extensive post-game content, which is mostly Melinoe tidying up loose ends following the main story completion, and Zagreus does not become a playable character at any point.
I can’t fault Supergiant Games as Hades 2 is an incredible game, jam-packed with content as it stands, but part of me wished to reunite with my beloved Heart-Seeking Bow.
Now, if you’re more into the story of Hades 2 and want to know Zagreus’ fate in it, read on, just beware HEAVY SPOILERS are in order.
Is Zagreus In Hades 2?
Yes, Zagreus is in Hades 2.
Final spoiler warning: if you do not wish to know his fate and are happy just knowing he’s in the game, stop reading right now.
Zagreus appears as an NPC and as an optional boss. That's right, Zagreus is the secret boss of Hades 2, similar to how Charon was in the first game. You'll be able to fight him after you find an Infernal contract being sold by Charon.
Melinoe does get to meet him after you beat Chronos in the Underworld. She projects herself and travels through time, warning Zagreus of the impending arrival of his grandfather while in the past. Eventually, once the main story is resolved, present-time Zagreus is freed from the claws of Chronos alongside Hades and Persephone.
You can interact with him further on, as he possesses the final keepsake you can get access to, with plenty of fun banter waiting for you in the process.
