It looks like there’s still more secrets to uncover in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 according to the game’s director Guillaume Broche. In a Eurogamer interview, Broche mentioned that there’s still a major secret players haven’t found yet, but he’s not gonna give any hints about it.
The painted world of Lumiere is massive, so it’s clear that Sandfall Interactive managed to put in something big for players to find. What could he be talking about? Let’s speculate.
Since Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s launch six months ago, players were already scouring every nook and cranny in Lumiere to find hidden details the game has on offer. They even found a painting about the entire dev team tucked away into a corner. While others were debating on which ending is the best or what potential DLC could be possible, some were hard at work finding out breadcrumbs of cryptic encounters in the game.

One player was obsessed with the “White Sands Mystery.’ According to the Reddit user’s post in the Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 subreddit, the White Sands location is one of the most baffling areas in the game due to its unique nature. Normally, Clair Obscur has two different kinds of areas: an explorable linear dungeon where enemies are found, and a small hub with no enemy encounters. The difference is easy to tell, as a regular hub area will only have a fixed camera angle with a music piece hidden somewhere.
The White Sands area is found next to the Serphenphare boss fight and far right to the Forgotten Battlefield. It’s an area rife with white sand (obviously) and red petals with a music record “Aline” found in the middle.
What’s strange about the White Sands is that it’s not a hub area. You could see the Lumiere Manor on a platform that you can’t reach, and party members like Lune comment on its strange appearance, with Maelle saying that it's not the same Manor they're familiar with.

It’s a level that you can freely explore with your party members and it even has an Expedition flag that serves as a checkpoint. On a normal level, this would entail there are enemies to expect. However, there’s nothing out of the ordinary here. Just a place you can freely walk around while a narrator speaks French poetry.
Of course, dataminers would’ve found something about this months ago. But the fact that this specific place exists in-game with zero context adds more to the mystery. What could it lead to? What’s so different about that Manor in the distance?
If this might be the secret the game director is teasing for the game, then it could be something huge similar to that NieR Automata cheat code that was found 3 years later.
Maybe the secret Guillaume mentioned isn’t the White Sands at all and something more inconsequential like a developer nod or a hidden NPC interaction. Fans have also jokingly said that there's no secret and this could be a bait by the devs so players can keep figuring things out. No one can know for sure, but so far the White Sands is one of the strangest places in the game, next to Renoir’s Drafts. Even I was creeped out by its severe lack of explanation.
What do you think is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s biggest secret?
