- Primary Subject: Chrono Trigger (SNES / Multi-Platform)
- Key Update: An opinion feature argues that Square Enix should prioritize giving Chrono Trigger an HD-2D remake to introduce its iconic time-travel story and combat to modern audiences.
- Status: Unconfirmed (Rumored)
- Last Verified: September 17, 2026
- Quick Answer: While Square Enix has not officially announced a Chrono Trigger remake, rumors and fan demand suggest an HD-2D visual overhaul could eventually happen.
Chrono Trigger came out in 1995, and despite how popular the game is, Square Enix has never even officially teased the thought of a remake.
It's surprising if we think about it. Chrono Trigger was a massive success, with some even stating it's one of the most significant titles to ever come out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). Some might even argue that it's one of the greatest games ever made.
We've gotten ports of the game to different consoles, and it's been slightly enhanced for those releases, but we haven't received a full-blown remake. And it's criminal.
The World Is Ready for a Chrono Trigger Remake
Despite the game coming out a few years before I was even born, I was able to play it thanks to my sister's old console systems. To this day, I think it's one of the best games ever to come out. From storytelling to pacing, it set the standard for other JRPGs. I got the game on my 3DS, and I enjoyed being able to play the game on the go.

It's baffling that in an area where almost every legacy Square Enix IP has received a new title or revamp, Chrono Trigger has been pushed to the sidelines. They've most recently remade Final Fantasy 7 into a trilogy, but they've also done a complete 3D remake of Trials of Mana, and Dragon Quest 1 through 3 got HD-2D remakes.
So, why not Chrono Trigger, a game that is arguably even more successful than these titles?
Chrono Trigger, even in its current state, is a great game. The seamless transitions into battle and the unique Dual and Triple Tech combo system are still as enthralling today as they were back then. You might be wondering why I think Chrono Trigger would need a remake if it's still good.

It is good, but gamers nowadays don't know it. Chrono Trigger is a game that is so excellent that it needs to be introduced to a whole new generation of players. They need to be able to experience the most perfectly paced RPGs ever made - with better graphics.
I think Chrono Trigger would be a great game to get an HD-2D remake. Just imagine how incredible the Kingdom of Guardia, 12,000 BC Zeal, or the post-apocalyptic Future would look. A remake that retains the iconic sprite aesthetic while also enhancing the lighting and cinematic feel is the treatment Chrono Trigger deserves.
Square Enix has proven that they can remake their IPs while honoring their heritage, so I'm sure they'll be able to do a Chrono Trigger remake justice. All they need to do is announce it, and I'll immediately pre-order and wait patiently - as I'm sure thousands of players would.
