GTA: The Trilogy Gets Surprise Physical Re-Release for Switch

GTA: The Trilogy

GTA: The Trilogy

It’s amazing how GTA: The Trilogy started out as a pretty mediocre remaster and is now a solid way to play these classic open-world games. Rockstar deserves credit for not giving up on this collection, even though they shouldn’t have released it in a bad state.

There might be even more good news surrounding this remaster, as fans have spotted a new physical version of GTA: The Trilogy for Nintendo Switch. Unlike the last release, this doesn’t have the “download needed” tag, with many hoping this is a full physical release with all three games in the cartridge. If all of the games are updated as well, that’s an extra bonus.

Fans spotted this new re-release on Amazon, where it not only dropped the “download needed” text blurb but is also cheaper. Naturally, many are hoping that it's a full physical release for this game after the last one required an internet connection to download the others. Hopes are high, and fans are surprised this hasn’t been advertised in advance.

New physical release for GTA: The Trilogy

While there is a chance that this could be one of those dreaded code-in-a-box affairs, those are also advertised in advance and displayed prominently in the boxes. That’s why fans are upset with some Switch 2 releases already being codes in a box, since it’s fairly early in the system’s life cycle.

GTA: The Trilogy should have been a slam dunk on release, as it features GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas in one collection. Unfortunately, Grove Street Games did a poor job of porting these to current-gen systems, and it took literal years to make the ports good. At least they’re decent now, and should be a fun way to kill time while waiting for GTA 6.

Expect news on this physical release for GTA: The Trilogy soon, given the massive debate between physical and digital games. We also expect this game to look and run better on Switch 2, now that they’re finally of quality.
