- Quick Answer: GTA 6 features over 170 animal species—including alligators, sharks, and various dog breeds—with interactive mechanics like petting and studying animals in the world.
We already knew that GTA 6 will have alligators in swamps, but the wildlife is a bit more diverse than that.
Game Informer recently dropped a 14-page special on all things GTA 6, with Rockstar providing additional insight into what the game will feature. This included the wildlife, and spoiler alert: there's a lot.
Here's what we know about the animals scattered throughout Leonida!
Exploring GTA 6's Wildlife
According to exclusive details Rockstar provided to Game Informer, GTA 6 will feature over 170 animal species. This includes 60 birds, over 30 land mammals, various fish, reptiles, and more.

In previous trailers and official cover art, we saw manatees, flamingos, pelicans, and alligators. This makes sense - after all, Leonida is based on Florida, so it's likely we'll encounter wildlife that's local to the state.
But now, we have additional confirmation on some of the other critters that will feature thanks to the Game Informer interview.

Can You Have Pets in GTA 6?
It's currently unconfirmed whether Jason and Lucia can own pets in GTA 6. However, it wouldn't be that far-fetched.

During the Extended Look, we saw Jason interact with a dog. As he approached the furry friend, on-screen prompts showed the option to Pet, Scold, or Study the animal. Since it's been programmed that Jason can interact with dogs, it's possible he might be able to own one.
