It’s the end of an era for MiHoyo’s PlayStation 4 version of Genshin Impact, as the studio has officially announced it will stop supporting the 13-year-old console. So what does this mean for PS4 users?

Earlier today, MiHoyo confirmed that support for the PlayStation 4 version will be gradually phased out “due to limitations related to hardware performance and platform application size.”

Thankfully, MiHoyo is giving PS4 players ample time to transition to a different supported platform. The game will stop receiving updates on PlayStation 4 by April 8, 2026. However, it will be delisted from the PlayStation Store starting September 10, 2025. This means players who haven’t installed Genshin Impact by that date will no longer be able to play it on PS4. Those who already have it installed can continue accessing the game.

In-game purchases will remain available for a while but will be permanently disabled by February 25, 2026.

This marks a major shift for Genshin Impact, as the PS4 edition has built a dedicated player base over the years. Unfortunately, the aging hardware is no longer able to keep up with the game’s rapid growth and content updates. The PlayStation 5 version will continue to receive full support, as expected.

Fans are already speculating whether this move could signal progress on the long-awaited Nintendo Switch version. Some believe that if MiHoyo is ending support for PS4, it might be unrealistic to expect the game to run on the base model of the Nintendo Switch, which is also limited by older hardware.

However, this decision adds weight to the theory that MiHoyo may be targeting the rumored Nintendo Switch 2 instead. With its improved specs and better internal memory, the Switch 2 could be the right fit for the expansive world of Genshin Impact.

MiHoyo originally teased a Switch version back in 2020, but there has been little to no news since then. We’ve taken a deeper look into that disappearance in a separate piece you can check out here.
