The Mario franchise is known for producing games that can tackle nearly any genre, and among those it took on, one of the most interesting would have to be RPGs. From the Mario & Luigi saga to most of the Paper Mario entries, all of them are unique in terms of plot and gameplay and are of a quality that can be enjoyed for hours on end.
Fans have certainly come to love the franchise's takes on the RPG genre, and they now eagerly anticipate how it will do so again. Should Nintendo ever decide that it's time for a new Mario RPG, instead of the Italian plumber as the main protagonist, perhaps another popular character should take the helm: Princess Peach.
While she often plays the role of a damsel in distress, the ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom has the capabilities to become the central figure in a role-playing title, and she could do it even better than Mario ever could. One of the reasons for this is that she has already proven herself to be a versatile fighter.
A recent example of this is in Princess Peach: Showtime!, wherein she wears various costumes and gains abilities based on what she has on. That concept alone can bring out a lot of potential in an RPG game, as it can be used to develop interesting attack options that make battles fun and engaging.
Aside from that game, others like Super Princess Peach and Super Mario RPG have laid the groundwork for her to show off that she can handle her own fights in interesting ways. Through them, we see her capable of using magic and a wide arsenal of weapons, further emphasizing that she would be perfect as both a diverse role-playing fighter and main protagonist.
Another good reason why Nintendo should seriously consider making her the lead in a Mario RPG is due to her status as the Princess of the Mushroom Kingdom. Her being a ruler could make for some deep and engaging storylines that have nothing to do with Mario and his pals.
A potential plot could involve her having to deal with problems other kingdoms, like Sarasaland and Beanbean, are facing in whatever way she deems best before they affect her own. Something like that would do well in fleshing out her personality and role, while also giving the other characters and areas in the Mario universe a chance to shine.
As a ruler, Princess Peach could also create some interesting features that provide more hours of gameplay in an RPG. One good example is utilizing in-game resources to make trade deals or execute orders to expand the kingdom for more weapons, items, and clothing options.
There's a lot of potential in giving Princess Peach her own RPG, and hopefully, Nintendo sees it at some point. Should the company make it happen, then it's likely to lead to one of the greatest games in the Mario franchise, which is why I'm hoping it becomes a real possibility in the future.
