It’s kind of crazy how a random social media post can cause a huge stir, but that’s what happened with Square Enix’s underrated Final Fantasy XIII. Thanks to something random popping up on X, fans now want a remaster for this PS3 and Xbox 360-era JRPG. While it’s far from a perfect game, its various mechanics have aged very well, which is why it deserves a second look.
Square Enix’s Final Fantasy social media account posted a random quote from Lightning, with a great pic of the character included for good measure. Once this popped up, fans immediately talked up its underrated status and how the game deserves a remaster or re-release on modern platforms. At the time of writing, only the Xbox Series version has a nice port of the game, while the PC port is standard but unimpressive.
Needless to say, fans now want to see some sort of Final Fantasy XIII remaster on PS5 and Switch 2, maybe even the original Switch. Many also want to see all three games in the XIII trilogy collected in one package, just so everyone gets the complete story of Lightning and co. Only time will tell if this happens, as Square Enix hasn’t even listened to fans who want that Final Fantasy IX remake.

Admittedly, Square Enix is pretty busy right now. The company is hard at work with Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3 and Kingdom Hearts 4, among other titles. We’re also getting a Final Fantasy Tactics remaster, which looks like a quality experience, minus the missing PSP features.
Final Fantasy XIII is pretty beloved by fans now, but it was scrutinized for plenty of valid reasons. The linearity and battle system aren’t problems today, but its storytelling is flawed, using made-up vernacular that’s hard to understand without reading various material in-game. If we do get a remaster or remake, it would be interesting to see if any changes can be made to make the story more accessible to fans.
