Developers have barely begun exploring what the Nintendo Switch 2 is capable of doing, and it seems Square Enix wants to push it to the limit already if reports of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth coming to the system are to be believed.
According to reliable industry insider NateTheHate, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is coming to Switch 2 next year. The massive RPG will also be available on Xbox, as Square continues to push for its games to become multi-platform. The rumor surfaced amid a possible Nintendo Direct coming this September 12, with leakers teasing that Nintendo had hit a “777” jackpot, possibly referring to titles like 007 First Light, Resident Evil 7, and FF7 making an appearance.
We’ve known for some time that FF7 Remake will be hitting both Switch 2 and Xbox later this year, with more information expected to be revealed at the rumored Nintendo Direct set to take place later this week. Early hands-on by content creators basically confirmed that Remake on Switch 2 will run at a locked and incredibly steady 30FPS, just like the original release of the title back in early 2020 on PlayStation 4.
However, the juggernaut that is FF7 Rebirth could prove to be a proper challenger for Nintendo’s hybrid handheld, or even the Series S, for that matter. The game features sprawling open-ended areas, and while not being a fully fledged open-world, it certainly pushed the PS5 almost to the max. The game can run at 60FPS with compromised visuals on the base model, with the graphics mode locked at 30. The PS5 Pro had an enhanced dynamic that mixes the best of performance and graphics mode. Image quality is also vastly superior, according to a deep dive by Digital Foundry.
The Switch 2 version will certainly be locked at 30, and it sadly would also come with a ton of visual compromises. However, if Square Enix finds a way to make it work relatively smoothly, getting such a massive game on-the-go would definitely be a big win for the company, which they solely need.
