- Quick Answer: Fatal Fury: COTW Season 2 features monthly character drops through June, including Nightmare Geese and two mysterious guest fighters
SNK is continuously looking to improve Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, and Season 2 could be its most ambitious attempt to date. Not only does it bring massive balance changes and game updates to the game, but it's also the start of a six-month frenzy, where the game will receive one DLC character per month.
We know the identities of four, including the already released Kim Jae Hoon, with Nightmare Geese (February), Blue Mary (March), and Wolfgang Krauser (April), with the final two being new guests (May and June). Seeing a fighting game receive this amount of DLC in such a short span of time is unreal by modern standards, where the likes of Street Fighter 6 are introducing new characters almost six months apart at times.
For producer Shinya Tamaki, this is something the veterans at SNK can pull off without disrupting the game's meta too much. Speaking to Gfinity, he stated: "Our company has a lot of experience when it comes to making competitive fighting games and adding characters to them, such as with KOF. We believe that by leveraging that experience, we can maintain a high quality even at the pace of adding one new character per month."
Comparing the DLC cadence of a fighting game to other genres is a nice exercise just to see how much less they get updated. However, that's not really the case with City of the Wolves, which has received a new character per month since October.
In that same timeframe, Street Fighter 6 has only gotten a singular new fighter: C. Viper, with Alex scheduled to be released by March. By that point, Fatal Fury would have gotten six new characters. Tamaki states that this swift rhythm to pump out DLC stems from a desire to please fans after waiting for over 20 years for a new Fatal Fury.
"Given that this is the first new title in the series in 26 years, we received many requests from fans asking for 'this' or 'that' character to be added.
As developers, our decision to add one character per month stems from the desire to try and respond to fans' requests as quickly as possible."
Finally, COTW guest characters have had some mixed reception, to say the least. While guests endemic to the genre like Street Fighter's Ken and Chun-Li have been well received, the likes of football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo and DJ Salvatore Ganacci have sparked much debate.
Tamaki admitted that the amount of feedback about outside characters has been overwhelming, confirming that the final two characters of Season 2 will also be guest characters, with one potentially being Fist of the North Star's Kenshiro.
"We are creating the two guest characters in a way that properly gets across what makes them so appealing, while also making sure they fully fit into the world of Fatal Fury. We hope the fans will continue to look forward to these two characters."
