Monster Hunter Wilds’ support character, Fabius, is starting to piss me off, and it’s starting to get personal.
Look, don’t get me wrong, Fabius was my bro during some of the game’s earlier challenges, notably during my dreaded moments with Savage Omega Planetes. He’s solely responsible for tanking most of the damage from that clanker and saving me from multiple mission failures. I respect the guy, if that’s what it means.
But now? He’s now a shell of his former self. Against a creature as terrifying as Gogmazios, his stalwart form and heroic aura somehow dissipate due to his hilarious bugs and glitches.
Let’s backtrack a bit. You see, during Gogmazios’ absolute cinema of a hunt, Fabius, the main character that he is, is supposed to be your bastion against the Elder Dragon’s deadly inferno attack. He raises his massive Lance shield, quelling the effects from the fire and flames and protecting you and your team in a cone-shaped barrier. On paper, that sounds pretty epic.

But no, he decides to go off script, refusing to raise his shield and hug the nearest wall. When Gog unleashes his big nova attack, he’s nowhere to be found. Hunters who relied on his shield’s protection are blown to smithereens, resulting in multiple carts. His AI is not exactly the smartest of our 8-player hunt. As someone with over 300 hours in this game, this is hilarious as it is frustrating.
The Gogmazios’ hunt isn’t exactly a cakewalk. I’m well aware of the DPS checks by hitting him with Dragon Element weapons during his Gaseous state, and I know deep down I’m doing things right. Nadia constantly reminds me that I’ve got Gog’s power in check, so that’s a great sign. It’s just that he’s not always consistent. There are miracle moments when he finally does his job right, and the iconic Monster Hunter theme plays. It’s cinematic, glorious, and shows what this hunt was meant to be.

Fret not, the worst is somewhat over. The good news is that Capcom has finally patched Fabius’s fugue issue, and he’s more likely to protect his team now. The recent hotfix adjusted his position, making him closer to Gog. His shield no longer gets delayed by incoming attacks, and he now warns us that we’re not doing a good enough job of weakening Gogmazios’ attacks.
The bad news? I no longer trust him. Even after Capcom fixed its problems, I’m not bringing a shielded weapon with me at all times. Whenever Gog prepares his final Hail Mary, I’ll simply pop my own shield and refuse to look Fabius in the eyes after everything he’s done. I could’ve had multiple Wartorn Dragongems if it weren’t for him.
You guys can keep him, but I’m gonna need him back for another Savage Omega Planetes rematch.
