As Monster Hunter Wilds’ Gogmazios is rampaging the Oilwell Basin, many Hunters still struggle to tell which state the Elder Dragon is currently in. This often results in failed runs with barely enough damage, as players forget to bring Dragon or Fire element weapons, reducing the optimal damage needed to deny Gog’s Nova attack.

This guide will help you identify which state Gogmazios is in and how to effectively deal damage. If you want a more general guide on how to beat Gogmazios, check out our separate piece here.

The most obvious sign that Gogmazios is in the Liquid State is if it is coated with its tar or oil. During this phase, the area is relatively calm. There are fewer explosions, and Gogmazios relies on stomping Hunters with its two massive wingarms.

Just remember these key indicators when Gog is in the Liquid State:

  • Body covered in tar or oil.
  • Minimal environmental explosions.
  • Limited fire-based attacks.

This is where you usually use your Fire Element weapon. While Dragon Element also works, Fire has a slight damage advantage, though the difference is minor. As a pro-tip: Fire and Dragon elements both deal effective damage in the first and second phases, so stick with whichever you’re most comfortable using.

Once the first and second phases are over, the final phase begins. Gogmazios’ Gaseous State is active. This is the part where Gogmazios is constantly flying, and you and your team are shooting Compact Anti-Wyvern lasers at it.

Just remember these key indicators when Gog is in the Gaseous State:

  • Skin appears dry and no longer coated in oil.
  • Frequent fire-based laser attacks.
  • Persistent explosive fire pools.

This is where Dragon Element weapons are mandatory. Your Fire Element weapons are useless here. After Gog is hit by the Convergent Elderbreaker, this is your cue to swap to your Dragon Element weapon.

If you don’t have to worry about bringing Fire and Dragon element weapons in the raid, bringing two Dragon Element weapons is viable. You only need Dragon Element to weaken Gog’s third phase, and everything else is just a gimmick.
