With Subnautica 2's early access release just hours away, many are wondering if the game can be played with friends.

As long-term fans will know, the first Subnautica did not feature multiplayer and was strictly a single-player experience. To play with friends, you'd need to download third-party apps and mods to explore and build bases together. Does this also ring true for the sequel?

Here's everything you need to know about multiplayer and co-op mode in Subnautica 2.

The game also supports cross-progression, which means you can pick up where you left off on a different device.

How Multiplayer Mode Works in Subnautica 2

From the start screen, you can choose to either host a multiplayer session or join your friends' world.

To create your own world, select "Host Multiplayer." From here, you can send your friends the in-game Friend Code or invite them if they're already on your friends list. If you're joining a friend's world, you'll need to use their Code or accept their request to join.

In co-op worlds, Subnautica 2 features shared inventories, meaning the storage locker you and your friends build is accessible to anyone who accesses the world. There will be non-shared inventories in the future, but they won't be available at launch.

All Data Entries are shared amongst players, meaning if one player learns a craft recipe or scans a new resource, all the other players learn it as well. Alternatively, if you uncover a blueprint, it is learned by all players, allowing one friend to build it back at base.

Co-op mode allows you to work together to build a mega base, as well as make your own base. You can play in the co-op world even if your friends are offline, and they can join again while you're midway into the story - though this means they might miss out on some underwater exploration.
