Marvel Rivals’ upcoming hero, Deadpool, is showcasing his fourth-wall-breaking powers, trolling the game’s 40 million players.
Since Season 5.5’s release, players have noticed that Deadpool’s hero icon is already in the game. You can’t see his skills, nor his lore, but everyone can see him just chilling in Marvel Rivals’ hero select roster.
That’s not even the most surprising thing. Deadpool’s early appearance in the game is pretty normal, considering he comes out in less than a few weeks. What’s most interesting, however, is how Deadpool’s role keeps changing every week.

When 5.5 launched, bringing Rogue along with it, Deadpool was classified as a Duelist. This was what everyone believed was his intended role. It would also make sense, considering his mercenary expertise, dishing out good damage using his dual pistols and swords.
Fast forward a week later, when the Pym Test Kitchen event went live, Deadpool changed his Duelist role to a Vanguard. This perplexes the entire community, with some calling out NetEase, suggesting that it may be a bug or a glitch in the system. Knowing Deadpool’s gimmick, everyone believed that this was an intentional swap.
Now, this is where it gets interesting: no one knows what Deadpool’s role is anymore. We can likely assume that Wade Wilson will infiltrate the Strategist role next week, creating further confusion in the entire community.

Fans speculate that Deadpool’s role might be the first of its kind in Marvel Rivals history. Unlike Mr. Fantastic with his Duelist-Hybrid setup, or Gambit’s Duelist-Strategist kit, Deadpool might be a jack of all trades or a multi-role character. That means he jumps from one role to another with varying abilities. Say, someone picks him as a Duelist, and he can show off his sharpshooter skills with his pistols and cut enemies with his blades.
Picking off a role like a Strategist wouldn’t really make sense for a hero like Deadpool, but maybe NetEase is working on a hilarious gimmick that lets him heal other players. Perhaps the most interesting role to pick here is Vanguard, a role that many Marvel Rivals players are looking forward to expanding. If Deadpool can turn into a Vanguard, this will make the roster more diverse. His enhanced regeneration ability would apply here, and he can just repel incoming damage using his blades.
It’s all just speculation, but this is clearly NetEase and Deadpool’s intention to throw off its playerbase, making them guess what kind of role he belongs to. This is also a humorous response by NetEase, calling out players who keep complaining about its lack of role diversity.
At this point, Deadpool’s role remains a mystery. Whether this is just an elaborate joke or not, Deadpool could be our first taste of a multi-role system in Marvel Rivals. If any character can bend the rules without breaking them, especially for a role-based design in Rivals, it’s the Merc with a Mouth. Either way, we can't wait to try him out when he releases this January 16.
