  • Primary Subject: Valve Reworks the CS2 Reload Mechanic With the Latest Update
  • Key Update: A new CS2 patch has been released, changing how the reload mechanic works and adding other features.
  • Status: Confirmed
  • Last Verified: March 19, 2026
  • Quick Answer: The latest surprise patch for CS2 changes how reloading works, possibly forcing players to be more tactical about it.

Before today, reloading in CS2 would work as you'd expect from any shooter game. When reloading, the game would take enough bullets from your reserve to fill out the magazine, and if you had any bullets left, those would be used to refill the new magazine.

However, the update has taken a more realistic approach, and now, if you have any bullets left in the magazine when using the reload button, those will be discarded. The game will take enough bullets from the reserve supply to fill a new magazine.

This will certainly impact how players reload in their games, as you can run out of bullets more quickly than before. On top of that, the total ammo count for each weapon has been reworked, and here is how much each weapon has:

  • M4A4 - 50 (was 120)
  • M4A1-S - 80 (was 100)
  • AWP - 15 (was 35)
  • R8 Revolver - 24 (was 16)
  • Desert Eagle - 28 (was 42)
  • Five-SeveN - 60 (was 120)
  • Glock - 80 (was 140)
  • CZ-75 - 36 (was 24)
  • Galil - 175 (was 125)
  • SSG-08 - 30 (was 100)
  • MP9 - 90 (was 150)

Aside from the rework, Valve has added other quality-of-life features to the game, such as map guides for competitive matches.

To help you get up to speed before trying the new update, here are the complete patch notes that were posted on the game's Steam page:

Gameplay

  • Reloading has been refactored to encourage more careful consideration of the use of ammo. When you reload a magazine-fed weapon, all remaining ammo in the magazine is discarded and a new, full magazine is taken from the reserves.
  • Reserve ammunition is now represented either as number of magazines, shells, or bullets, depending on the weapon.
  • The fill-level of the current weapon is now displayed below the ammo count.
  • Tuned reserve magazine counts per-weapon.

Map Guides

  • Limited map guides are now available in Competitive and Retakes (first 5 rounds of the half, 30 node max).
  • sv_allow_annotations_access_level supports 3 values: 0 – disabled. 1 – limited view. 2 – full and editable.
  • sv_annotation_limits_max_rounds_per_half (default 5) determines how many rounds into the half guides are allowed. -1 for unlimited.
  • Minimal starter map guides have been added for all Active Duty maps.
