Hollow Knight: Silksong is actually coming out really soon, and that feels really weird to say. Many joked about this indie sequel “never coming out,” due to the early announcement and lack of news, but that’s all changed. Now that Silksong is coming out on September 4, many are already predicting it will be Game of the Year.
The only problem with that statement is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, a game many also said would win that award this year.
At the time of writing, Expedition 33 has a clear advantage over Silksong because people have played and loved the French RPG. It also has the advantage of being an original IP, whereas Silksong is a sequel to the original Hollow Knight. Minds can always change by the time this new game comes out, so we’re going to discuss the possibilities.
The Case for Hollow Knight: Silksong
Once again, Hollow Knight: Silksong isn’t out yet, so this is mere speculation on how the indie Metroidvania could win Game of the Year.
If we’re being honest, though, being a sequel that improves on one of the best Metroidvania titles in recent memory should be enough to get that award. The original Hollow Knight has satisfying combat, a beautiful, distinct graphical style, and some great world-building. Fans also love some of the Soulslike elements incorporated, like having to find your body to get some items back.
Silksong just has to be a better version of this already great game, and that award is won. It’s really that simple, as other games have tried ripping off this indie darling and not doing the same things well. Just to be clear, other indie Metroidvanias aren’t rip-offs, but there have been games that tried having a similar art style and gameplay loop.
The Case for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Because Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has been around for many months, this game has a much stronger case for winning Game of the Year. Ask anyone who’s played this game and they will tell you about the strong world, likeable characters, breathtaking music, and addictive combat system. It’s clear that this game was made with plenty of love, and the fact that an original IP like this was able to come out this year still amazes us.

Honestly, all of that is enough to give this RPG the Game of the Year award. For a brief time, this game made turn-based RPGs seem like the cool hip thing fans want on all of their RPGs. Now that fans have thought about it, they know variety keeps games interesting, but this did result in some more turn-based games being played.
More Realistic Winners
If I’m being honest, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 will likely win Best RPG, while Hollow Knight: Silksong will easily win Best Indie Game.
Media like The Game Awards will likely crown Death Stranding 2, Ghost of Yotei, or Donkey Kong Bananza Game of the Year. After all, these are huge AAA games with massive AAA budgets, and these usually win that top award.
Still, in our hearts and minds, Expedition 33 or Hollow Knight: Silksong will be Game of the Year.
