- Quick Answer: Bungie is overhauling Marathon by abandoning rigid seasonal deadlines and introducing a permanent PvE experience to reduce player friction and progression stress.
When Bungie first announced Marathon, I was excited. The extraction-shooter looked extremely fun, and I loved the neon-soaked design of its mysterious world.
Unfortunately, my excitement soon died when I actually played it. I've tried plenty of FPS games with friends over the years, but none of them had a skill gap as big as Marathon's. I was confused by the map, the Faction missions, and the progression. Even when I played with people better than me, we would often get flanked by other players or enemy AI.
I haven't touched the game in months. In fact, I've considered deleting it entirely. But now that Bungie is making some major changes, Marathon might finally become playable for casuals like me.
Bungie Is Fixing Marathon? I'm Listening
When I previously played Marathon, I remember getting ambushed by sweaty squads and barely making any meaningful progression. Every match felt like a frantic blur to survive rather than a chance to actually enjoy the game.

I logged out and never logged in again - because what was the point of playing a game that only brought frustration?
As I played, I had this thought: why does it feel like I was being pushed away from committing to the game? I didn't experience this with Valorant, Marvel Rivals, or Overwatch. But then I heard Bungie was making some major changes to Marathon, and suddenly, my interest in the shooter had piqued once again.

Bungie has confirmed that they are moving away from the strict seasonal schedule, which means I won't have to worry about a constant refresh forcing me to grind every new season. As a casual player, I'm glad that my hard-earned gear or map knowledge won't get wiped away, and it finally seems as if I'll be able to play at my own pace without feeling like I need to clock in every single day.
Another thing they're planning to do is release a PvE-only mode, and this is the biggest game-changer for me. Extraction shooters are inherently punitive, but Marathon is exceptionally difficult because you need to fight both opposing players AND the environment. Having to fight for my life while completing Faction missions feels virtually impossible, but a PvE mode could finally solve that.

With a PvE-only mode, I'll be able to play with manageable progression and more variety, learning the layouts of each map without feeling pressured by a sweaty three-stack pushing me. I might even be able to get a handle on the gunplay mechanics and complete the objectives of the different Factions, because I was barely able to do that after launch.

Of course, there will still be some difficulty with the AI threats, and Marathon definitely knows how to pit the environment against you. However, playing solo or with friends should be a more relaxed experience without having to constantly fight for my life, and I'm hoping that with this new update, I'll finally be able to enjoy - and appreciate - everything Marathon has to offer.
Marathon will officially lower the barrier to entry for players, and I'm all here for it. If these updates live up to expectations, I'm more than willing to give Tau Ceti IV a second chance.
