Age of Empires 4: How to Save Your Game

When going to battle in Age of Empires 4, a lot of time and effort can be spent ensuring success. Players can reimagine history during the Campaign, experiment with civilisations in Skirmish, or commence with training in the Art of War. During all of these, it's important to know how to save the game to prevent losing any progress made.

In this guide, we've explained how the game can be saved in each single-player mode.

Campaign Mode

The Campaign mode in Age of Empires 4 will autosave after every mission or objective that a player completes. However, to prevent themselves from having to restart a mission entirely if they fail or need to leave, they can also save the game from the escape menu at any point.

When they need to, players can return to the single-player home menu, and select 'Load Saved Game' under Campaign, as shown above. For some tips on the first portion of the Campaign - The Normans - we've got a useful guide here.

Skirmish Mode

Skirmish mode in Age of Empires 4 is a highly customisable form of gameplay in which players can freely battle under whatever terrain and civilisation conditions they wish. We talk more about how to play Skirmish here.

This mode does not have autosave as the battle is a success after any of the three win conditions are met. Therefore, players will need to manually save throughout to not lose their progress, The game can be saved, and loaded, from the escape menu as shown above.

Art of War Mode

The Art of War mode in Age of Empires 4 is made up of various short training missions. This mode is to assist players with getting used to economy, combat and siege weapons in the game.

Due to Art of War challenges being short and intended for one sitting, the mode has no autosave or manual save functions. Therefore, players will need to complete these challenges when they start them, as they cannot load any save data at a later date.

Save Folder Location for Age of Empires 4

For whatever reason, be it an in-game issue or a PC problem, you may need to access the save files for your Age of Empires 4 game. These can be accessed using File Explorer by going through the following process:

  • Documents → My Games → Age of Empires IV → Users → [User Code] → Savegames

In this folder, all of your save data for Age of Empires 4 will be stored. So if uninstalling and reinstalling the game on your PC or elsewhere, it's these folders that you need to keep!
