With the New LEGO Batman Coming, Now Is the Best Time to Replay Arkham Asylum

LEGO Batman and Batman

It’s still hard to believe that LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is one of 2026’s most anticipated games, but that’s what everyone is saying about the project. This unique retelling of Batman’s story is essentially an Arkham game with LEGO characters and moments from the movies. Honestly, considering everything we’ve seen so far, what’s not to like?

We won’t see Legacy of the Dark Knight until next year, so now’s the best time to play some old Batman games to get ready for its release. Considering how Legacy looks like it takes everything from the Arkham series, it might be best if fans replay Batman: Arkham Asylum, the game that started it all.

Hot take: Arkham Asylum is still the best game DC’s caped crusader has ever had.

The Blueprint

Fans who saw the rhythm-like combat in TT Games’ new LEGO Batman immediately compared it to the Arkham series, as that became the series’ signature. That’s because this combat system has influenced so many games, and it’s fair to say Rocksteady struck gold when they created this. Seeing it reused and improved upon in games like Marvel’s Spider-Man shows how much modern titles owe to Batman: Arkham Asylum.

Even if the graphics have aged a bit, anyone who plays Arkham Asylum will have the pleasure of experiencing a timeless gem. The stealth, the combat, the Metroidvania-like exploration, this is just an amazingly built game with incredibly tight design. If I’m being honest, this was my most replayed game until Marvel’s Spider-Man came around.

One day, I’ll finally gather all of those Riddler Trophies. Just not today (or tomorrow).

It’s Da Bat

Whether fans are playing Batman: Arkham Asylum for the first or hundredth time, they will see just how much its design will influence LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight. Granted, a lot of the design is also based on Arkham City and Arkham Knight, but those two games wouldn’t have been possible without Arkham Asylum.

Some fans might find Arkham Asylum lacking compared to its sequels. Because the game takes place in said asylum, fans won’t have a huge open world to explore. There are also certain techniques introduced in the sequels that aren’t here, like Arkham City’s cape-stun beatdown. However, they will also discover the most coherent story in this game series and some incredible level design that open-worlds can’t always replicate.

Batman: Arkham Asylum

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight will undoubtedly improve on Arkham Asylum in most ways. The combat looks really fun, stealth looks solid, and there’s even a Batmobile. We might also have the best version of Gotham City to explore, since none of the Arkham games were able to give players a “standard” Gotham due to the stories they told.

But even if this new LEGO Batman game is better, we know Batman: Arkham Asylum is still worth playing. In fact, I’m going to replay it right now…
