LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight has become one of 2026’s most anticipated games, and it’s all because it plays like an Arkham game. That’s not a complaint at all, as fans dearly miss the Arkham series and hate how Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League followed up on that continuity.
Because this is a LEGO game, there are going to be some differences from Rocksteady’s main Arkham series. One of those changes is an open world with actual people inside Gotham City. That might sound like low praise, but when you consider how Arkham Knight wrote around not having people in Gotham, this almost feels surreal.
Honestly, this is a significant improvement over LEGO Batman, and could even make Legacy of the Dark Knight better than Arkham Knight in the long run.
Welcome to Gotham
Seeing LEGO Batman glide through a living and breathing Gotham City shouldn’t really be a surprise, but it hasn’t happened in an Arkham game yet. The closest comparison to that was Gotham Knights, but you could only play as Batgirl, Nightwing, Robin, and Red Hood. Arkham Knight was designed not to have citizens in the game, which made for fun gameplay, but it did make the atmosphere feel less interesting.
It is kind of funny that this game made entirely of LEGO might be the definitive open-world Batman game, but we could be living in that reality next year. We aren’t saying that it will be better than Arkham, as that is arguably the best superhero game franchise, but it is sad how that series never gave us a populated Gotham in any of its games.
To the Batmobile!
Clips on Twitter have surfaced of the Batmobile in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, and it looks really fun to drive. While it doesn’t look like it's packed with weapons like it is in Arkham Knight, the fact that players can make donuts on the road is pretty fun. The Arkham fan in me will mostly use grappling hooks and glides, but I’ll definitely give that Batmobile a spin here.

Having the Batmobile in this game could also mean some fun race-themed challenges and car chases, like in Arkham Knight. Maybe this game will offer a better balance of grapple hook zips and Batmobile missions, as Arkham Knight overused Batman’s signature vehicle. Regardless, it’s fun seeing options like this in a LEGO game, of all things.
We never thought people would be this excited for a new LEGO Batman game, but Legacy of the Dark Knight is worth getting hyped for. Having this unique take on Batman’s story with cues from the various movies has us curious. Let’s hope the final product lives up to our expectations.
