The Avatar Fighting Game Is Cool, But We Deserve an Open-World RPG set in Republic City

Avatar Legend of Korra

There’s an Avatar: The Last Airbender fighting game coming and it’s exactly what you expect.

The working title is Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game is a 1 versus 1 fighter starring everyone’s favorite characters in the hit Nickelodeon TV show including Avatar Aang, Avatar Korra, Zuko, Katara and a whole lot more. Just like the award-winning show, the fighting game is keeping the stylized 2D hand-drawn animation that the series is known for.

The fighting game is set to release on Steam, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and the Nintendo Switch 2 this 2026.

The Avatar fighting game.

As a huge fighting game fan, it checks all the things I wanted in an Avatar fighter including an interesting roster of characters and a “great netcode” according to the devs. While this is all great and all, I’m still craving for that fabled Avatar open-world RPG.

Ever since the Legend of Korra ended in 2014, I’ve always wanted to play an open-world Avatar game. The obvious reason is that its world has so much atmosphere that limiting it through a TV show is a missed opportunity. The Legend of Korra’s Republic City would be a perfect place for some elemental bending action, where we create our custom character and take them into Avatar’s brutal world. It could play similar to what United Front Games did with their Sleeping Dogs title, where our protagonist busts crimes and apprehend thugs in PG-13 fashion.

Imagine exploring Republic City.

Similar to what I’ve mentioned in a Tron open-world RPG, the open-world Avatar game doesn’t need to fit into the series canon. It only needs to be a standalone adventure featuring our protagonist as they discover the highs and lows of being a bender years before Avatar Korra stepped into the city. There’s a lot of politics at play here, and the writing department could experiment with Republic City factions like the Triads and even Amon’s grassroots movement.

The good news here is that while there’s no word for an open-world Avatar: The Last Airbender game, development is already ongoing for a triple A Avatar game. It’s a massive project funded by Paramount and it’s being developed by Saber Interactive, the folks behind PvE titles like Warhammer 40,000: Space Marines. The rumored AAA Avatar game would let players control a new Avatar, but that’s all there is to it so far as it’s still in early development.

We could even go to Avatar Aang Island!

I’m actually excited for that, but it’s not the open-world game I’ve always wanted. Just imagine the possibility of playing an Avatar open-world game where you, playing as an Avatar, riding on your own pet companion (like Naga and Appa) and explore Republic City.

The Avatar fighting game could be the blueprint for my pipe dream. If it’s successful enough, Gameplay Group International, the developers behind the upcoming Avatar fighting game, might have the funding they needed for an open-world Avatar: The Last Airbender RPG.

If not, well, we’re just gonna have to wait and see if that Paramount-funded AAA Avatar game is great. But at least we’ve got two major Avatar titles coming our way, and that’s already a lot for this franchise after years of terrible videogame adaptations.
