Hollow Knight's heir, Silksong, is set to be a game that goes beyond everyone's expectations. Given that it has been in development for more than six years, there's certainly a lot to look forward to, and one of those is the new protagonist.
The game is set to be played through the eyes of Hornet, a popular character from the previous entry in the series. With her taking the helm as the main protagonist and the amount of time Team Cherry has had polishing her, one has to wonder if she'll be much better than The Knight. Signs point towards her surpassing her predecessor, and it's all because of a particular quality she has.
Hornet's gameplay advantages over The Knight are clear, as she's intended to have a more acrobatic moveset and tools at her disposal. While those are great and will definitely make Silksong more engaging and exciting as both a platformer and metroidvania, what really makes her stand out over the previous protagonist is the fact that she'll have the ability to talk.

Some may not see that as a big deal, but allowing Hornet to speak and provide dialogue makes her a better main character. In the previous game, people fell in love with The Knight despite the inability to converse, as it allowed them to come up with their own depiction of what the character was going through in different situations.
Great as that can be, it also makes everything feel one-sided in terms of world-building and developing bonds with the in-game inhabitants. In some ways, that made Hollow Knight feel lacking, despite it being a beautifully crafted title.
That won't be the case when playing Silksong as Hornet, as her ability to speak will provide a better understanding of everything about the new world players will be plunged into. It also allows her to show an important quality that can help build a better story: emotion.

Hollow Knight certainly had a ton of moments that were meant to express something to the player and make them feel something, but they lacked the impact they would have had if The Knight actually reacted to them. The sequel aims to resolve that with Hornet, as she'll be able to express herself to everything that goes on around her and ensure that situations convey what they're supposed to better than the previous game.
Her being able to talk can also make the game's NPCs more interesting. Since it's now two voices in conversations instead of just one, situations where characters will open up about their backstory or dive into their personalities will be more prominent. Such a thing also helps expand the lore and provide a better understanding of it, which is good for a series with such a rich in-game history.
The Knight was certainly a fine protagonist, but Hornet is set to be a better one. Team Cherry's decision to allow her to be as vocal as she was in the previous game not only makes her a better main character, but it may even help Silksong reach better heights of success than its predecessor did. There's no telling if that will be the case, but given what the new main character has over The Knight, it seems very likely to happen.
