Hollow Knight Silksong: Why Mount Fay Isn’t Worth the Hassle Despite the Amazing Reward

When it comes to Hollow Knight: Silksong, it shouldn't come as a surprise that it's difficult, especially since many fans talk about how absurdly tough it can get, to the point Team Cherry has already made it easier. There are many instances when the game emphasizes its brutality, but one stands out in particular: The climb to the top of Mount Fay.

As players explore the world of Silksong, they will eventually reach the dangerous icy challenge. The reward for those who manage to reach the top is amazing, but it's as though the steps to get there were designed not to make it worthwhile.

Players should consider skipping it for their own sanity, even if it means giving up something that would enhance their abilities to explore the game's many environments. For those wondering why Mount Fay's challenge isn't worth the hassle of taking on, it's due to a few important reasons.

1. Players Are on a Constant Timer as Soon as They Step One Foot Into the Challenge

Some platformers consist of timed challenges where players must get from point A to point B as quickly as possible, all while trying to overcome obstacles set up to ensure they fail and restart from the beginning. The climb to the top of Mount Fay is the only one in Silksong, but what makes it absurd is that it consists of multiple instances where players have to get from one area to the next as quickly as possible.

This is because it is a freezing area, and Hornet was not designed to withstand the cold, which means she'll have to rely on things to keep her warm, such as campfires and lightbulbs, that can be found during the ascent. The problem is that a good chunk of these heat sources is spread too far from one another, basically acting as individual timed challenges throughout the climb, with each one getting harder than the last.

Not being able to reach any of them fast enough spells instant death, which means having to go back all the way to the bottom. While there are bench checkpoints that can make death a non-issue, getting to even the first one can prove to be impossible, and that's an entirely different problem regarding Mount Fay.

2. Mount Fay’s Ardous Climb Has Very Few Benches Despite Its Length

For casual Hollow Knight fans or platformer players, these people will rely on benches to get them through the most difficult parts of Silksong, which includes the climb to the top of Mount Fay. However, one of the biggest reasons that makes the challenge not worthwhile is the fact that there are only very few metallic resting spots to help make it through to the end.

Having sparse checkpoints is a thing in the game and has become a pet peeve for Silksong players, but nothing emphasizes that more than Mount Fay's climb. The distance between each one feels extremely far, and given the constant timed challenges in between and how far the end goal is, failing to reach any of them can be very demoralizing, especially since freezing to death and being forced to restart the challenge are very likely to happen.

It doesn't help that one of the benches is hidden away from the player, making the climb even more unnecessarily difficult than it already is. Because even the act of getting a checkpoint can prove too difficult, it's best for players to Mount Fay entirely.

3. The Climb Requires Players to Be Extremely Precise With Little to No Room for Error

To the people who think Silksong is easier than Hollow Knight, especially when it comes to the platforming aspect, all they'll have to do is go through Mount Fay, and they'll likely change their minds quickly. Even with all of Hornet's abilities that make her more mobile than The Knight, she can barely make it through from one safe surface to the next during the climb.

Players are required to have mastered the art of jumping, floating, dashing, and using the Clawline if they want to have any hope of reaching the top, which is not an easy thing to do. What's worse is that even if they become skilled at all of them, Team Cherry designed the challenge in a way that if they make even the smallest of errors, they'll likely fall or freeze to death, losing all progress despite becoming adept at platforming.

Again, there is a great reward for those who are brave enough to overcome the challenge that is Silksong's Mount Fay, but the skill required to do so is so high that many will likely not even try to attempt it. Even for those who do manage to reach the top, it still feels unsatisfying, mainly due to the process that needs to be undergone to get there. It isn't worth the pain to try it, even with the amazing item that waits at the top, so people should skip it and enjoy the other, more amazing parts of the game.
