Marvel Rivals’ Season 5 drops this November 14 and brings in one of the best Strategists in the game, Gambit.
One of Marvel’s most iconic X-Men superheroes will make his first-ever appearance in the game, alongside a plethora of balance updates and an interesting social space for players.
What makes Gambit’s addition interesting is how he’s likely to change the competitive meta with his powerful set of abilities. For starters, he can heal and damage foes with a flick of his cards. Using his power to manipulate kinetic energy, he can dish out decent damage as well as provide burst healing to his team.
But there’s one ability that makes Gambit a must-pick moving forward: his purify ability.

Like Kiriko’s Suzu in Overwatch 2, Gambit can purify or cleanse abnormal status effects for his team. It can counter almost all crowd control abilities in the game, including Doctor Strange’s Eye of Agamotto Ultimate, The Thing’s stun, and Blade’s anti-heals. Even better, it heals allies while cleansing them.
I can already see more players picking up Gambit when he launches this Season 5, but mastering him will take time, as his kit has a high skill ceiling.

Those who plan to become Gambit mains will have a lot of reading to do, especially with his ability info (which is two pages, by the way). Prospecting Gambit mains will need to pay close attention to which cards they’re holding. Hearts are typically for healing, while Spades deal damage or provide buffs.
Remy’s ultimate, Ragin’ Royal Flush, is also a game-changer, especially during intense teamfights. It can purify status effects, boosting movement speed and increasing ultimate charge acceleration. This is the perfect clutch tool that might win battles, provided the Gambit knows how to play.
Gambit’s ultimate is primarily an offensive ultimate meant to destabilize an aggressive push or to hold off ground. It might even be better than Rocket Raccoon or Cloak & Dagger’s ultimate.

Gambit’s pick rate is bound to skyrocket, but it’s not for his abilities alone. He also has a special team-up ability with Magneto, supercharging the Vanguard’s greatswords with exploding kinetic energy to throw them at enemies. It deals immense damage and can be combo-ed with his Mag-Cannon for quick kills.
Magneto is already among the most-picked Vanguards in Rivals, alongside Doctor Strange and Emma Frost, so it wouldn’t be a surprise when both Remy and Erik populate higher-elos like Grandmaster and Celestial. As a Magneto main, I already see myself pairing up with a Gambit when Season 5 goes live.
The only downside to Gambit’s kit is that it relies heavily on player skill. His high skill ceiling won’t be effective for players used to easier Strategists like Luna Snow or Jeff the Land Shark, where they just healbot their allies. Like Adam Warlock or Loki, players would need to be fast, swapping between card types and managing ability cooldowns.
Overall, while Gambit has a pretty solid ability kit so far, he still has clear weaknesses: his limited resources can be exploited. A good Gambit player doesn’t simply throw cards at random or burn through their card resource; they’ll have to... checks notes ...play their cards right.
