I have been playing Helldivers 2 for quite some time now. After a long day at work, I hop on our local Discord server and invite a few of my friends over for some quick 'spreading democracy' missions.
While I don’t personally find the 4-player PvE game mode stale, I half expected Arrowhead Studios to add a completely fresh game mode that goes beyond the 4-player limit. I have always wanted to see a 6-8 player game-mode where we take on a massive Automaton, Terminid or Illuminate base. In simpler terms, maybe the game could use a simple raid mode.

Imagine you and seven other Helldivers dropping into a planet, securing kills on random clankers and alien scum as you make your way to the game’s objective: A base of operations with the faction’s most powerful general. Whether it’s a big Illuminate alien or a massive Strider Robot, it should be large enough to make an 8-player raid feasible and all the more epic.
The raid mode should limit the amount of stratagems we can get, making the encounter more reliant on skill and teamwork. Additionally, the DSS (Democracy Space Station) could serve as our temporary base of operations before the big hunt.
We’ve already had our first taste of a raid-like encounter with the Terminid’s Hive Lord. While taking on the Hive Lord with zero preparation is considered suicide, the blueprint is already there and Arrowhead only needs to tweak the damage numbers a bit and provide an exclusive game mode built for the raid.

I’m not the only person asking for an 8-player game mode. Players have asked about this feature since the game’s release. They’ve been speculating where Helldivers 2’s live-service could enhance over time, and so far we’ve already gotten a new faction as well as deadlier enemy types to deal with. The only thing left is an 8-player game mode or a major raid.
The most interesting thing about this is that this isn’t impossible for Arrowhead Studios. A Reddit user in the Helldivers subreddit has found traces of game files that can support eight players into a lobby. However, there is no game mode present that can do that. Not even hanging out with other players inside your ship can support 8 players.
It’s only a matter of time before Arrowhead studios drops the bomb and reveals a full-on 6 or 8-player game mode. They’ve been known to drop big announcements out of nowhere like the Halo warbond reveal.
No one knows when that update comes out, but the possibilities are getting bigger and bigger over time. But before they get to that kind of feature, Arrowhead must prioritize fixing the game’s core issues including server problems and overall optimization, otherwise there won’t be any players left when we finally get that much-needed raid mode.
