This September 4, Helldivers 2 is getting a major update called Into the Unjust. It takes players deep into the Terminid undergrounds to decimate swarms of vile bugs. This is easily one of the biggest updates in terms of gameplay since, for the first time in the series, you won’t have access to your most powerful weapons: your Stratagems.
While it’s not a full-on horror mode, the update adds a real sense of dread as players are forced to rely on their standard weapons instead of leaning heavily on Stratagems. There are no 500 KG Bombs, reinforcements, or orbital support when you’re trapped in the tunnels, and that alone is terrifying. It feels similar to Deep Rock Galactic’s underground expeditions, except in Helldivers 2’s case, it’s an endless swarm of furious Terminids charging at you.

Into the Unjust introduces “Hive Worlds,” massive biomes crawling with Terminid swarms. Expect twisting labyrinths that lead to a Hive Lung at the center. Lorewise, players are sent here to uncover the mystery behind the strange ‘Gloom’ shroud covering these planets, and the Hive Lung is the key to understanding it.
Beyond delving into these Hive Worlds, the update also brings a new mission type. Helldivers can now escort an oil rig and defend it against waves of Terminids as it extracts oil from the planet. Seems familiar.

It looks like Arrowhead is using this update to power up the Terminids after months of being target practice compared to Automatons and the Illuminate. Thanks to the Gloom, the bugs are mutating and evolving into something deadlier. We’re clearly underprepared, and for good measure, Arrowhead even decided to add a dragon.
According to the official Sony blog, players can also expect more terrifying new creatures roaming Hive Worlds. Honestly, that thought alone is enough to make us nervous.

This might be my favorite Helldivers 2 update so far, mainly because it opens the door for Arrowhead to expand into full dungeon-style gameplay in the future. This feels like a test run for what’s to come, and I can see future missions taking us into Illuminate bases or deep into Automaton factories. The Gloom infestation could be just the beginning of an entirely new direction for the game.
I can’t wait to dive in with my squad this September 4.
