Arrowhead Should Seriously Consider Making a Real-Time Strategy Game Based on Helldivers

Arrowhead Game Studios has provided one of the best single and multiplayer experiences in the form of Helldivers 2. The game is beloved by many, which should come as no surprise given its amazing co-op multiplayer experience and world that continues to grow.

Considering what Arrowhead has managed to create and achieve, it has the opportunity to see how far it can take the Helldivers IP. Since it has proven itself capable of providing a great third-person shooter, perhaps it should explore another genre in which it can find more success.

Among the options that can be tackled, I believe going the real-time strategy route would be the most logical choice. As for why Arrowhead should consider the genre, one reason is that it has a winning formula due to Helldivers 2's factions. The Terminids, Illuminate, and the Automatons have a variety of units, all of which could easily translate into real-time strategy gameplay.

The human faction would do just as well, given that Arrowhead has the capabilities of the Super Earth military force to work with. By incorporating the four into a real-time strategy game, players can finally create and witness wars that they've only been able to imagine for so long, giving them more reason to love the Helldivers IP.

Another reason Arrowhead should consider the genre is that it can be used as an opportunity to provide more depth into the lore it has established. By creating a real-time strategy game based on the world of Helldivers, the developer can give more insight into the participants of the galactic war via a story mode.

Through it, players can better learn about how exactly the Illuminate returned, why the Automatons despise humanity so much, the Terminids' origins, and even the motive behind Super Earth's goal of total domination. It's also a way of further expanding the human faction, as a well-made plot can provide them with extra personality and actions with consequences, making them more memorable as a result.

Deepening players' connections with the factions and providing more knowledge about them ensures that the Helldiver IP remains relevant for a long time. Arrowhead is already trying to do so with Helldivers 2, but a real-time strategy game with a good story mode could help with that immensely.

The final reason why it would make sense for the IP to tackle the genre is that there are already blueprints for arenas where top-down battles can take place. Helldivers 2 and even its predecessor have an abundance of planets that were either liberated or conquered, and basically all of them would be perfect as potential maps. All Arrowhead would have to do is change them a little to fit the gameplay from a top-down perspective, which shouldn't be too difficult for the developer.

With that amount of potential, it would be a missed opportunity for Arrowhead if it didn't even consider the idea of a Helldivers real-time strategy game. There's a chance it could happen, but for now, fans will just have to see where the developer goes with its incredibly successful IP.
