Will Darksiders 4's Reported Co-op Enhance or Ruin the Single-Player Campaign?

Darksiders' Fury and Strife

Darksiders' Fury and Strife

Darksiders 4 was one of the biggest announcements from THQ Nordic’s recent showcase, with fans excited to see what this game will do. The fact that every horseman of the apocalypse is going to be playable in this entry is exciting, even if Strife doesn’t get his own game. Reports have also claimed that Co-op will feature, which is even more exciting.

However, the Darksiders franchise is known for being primarily single-player, and we have to wonder if co-op is a good idea. While fans have wanted co-op in this series for the longest time, adding that feature could end up handicapping this new entrant. Many fans are hoping that isn’t the case, but it’s happened before.

Co-op Flops

The results of adding multiplayer to mostly single-player games are mixed, to say the least. One reason fans are worried about Darksiders 4 potentially having co-op is how the feature affected games like Gotham Knights, Suicide Squad, and Dead Space 3. While those games are more than playable, focusing on online multiplayer did affect their quality in the long run.

It will be interesting to see how this new game handles multiplayer, given how different each of these entries has been. Darksiders has experimented with Zelda, Diablo, and Dark Souls, so seeing what this fourth entry keeps from previous games is going to be interesting. As long as THQ Nordic can balance multiplayer with single-player, fans will be happy.

A Genesis for Darksiders?

Despite fears of what Darksiders 4 might be like with co-op, fans do remember the spinoff title Darksiders: Genesis, which had two-player co-op and received good reviews. The game is a ton of fun and was everyone’s introduction to Strife, who proved to be a great addition to this series. It’s just that this is a spinoff, and not a mainline entry.

While the game is canon to this series’ story, it uses a top-down perspective that makes it less dynamic than previous entries. It’s also why this game, being Strife’s, feels a bit odd, since he shares the spotlight with War, the protagonist of the franchise’s first entry. Seeing this horseman share the spotlight not once, but twice, is odd.

Darksiders 4

Still, for all these complaints, Darksiders: Genesis was a very solid game and could mean good things for Darksiders 4. It’s doubtful that it will use the top-down perspective used in games like Titan Quest, but using similar co-op mechanics could be a good thing. Let’s just hope there’s a unified vision here so it doesn’t feel like an incomplete game that would be better as a single-player experience.
