Why the Original Call of Duty Black Ops Is a Masterpiece That Not Even BO7 Can Beat

The Call of Duty: Black Ops series has certainly become massive since its start in 2010. It's set to welcome its 7th game this November, which is a testament to its success, given the amount of time it has been around and the number of titles it has already produced.

However, due to the series' popularity, there are often discussions on which of its entries is the best. Every fan has their own unique answer, but among all the games, there is one that is considered the favorite of many, and with good reason.

I am referring to the first-ever Call of Duty: Black Ops game, and for something made in 2010, it still manages to outshine all of its successors, even the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. It is a masterpiece that none of the other entries have come close to matching, and it's because of two reasons: its campaign and multiplayer.

As someone who has played numerous Call of Duty games, I can say that the original Black Ops' story is the most memorable of them all. It had an interesting cast of characters, an intriguing plot with a great twist, cutscenes featuring cinematic shots that warranted your attention, and so much more.

I would even go as far as to say that out of all the Call of Duty campaigns, the original Black Ops had the best one. Everything from Mason's lines to the action sequences is still stuck in my head even years after, and no other story mode, not even the ones from future games, has come close to being as memorable.

As for the other reason why the first Call of Duty: Black Ops is a masterpiece that's leagues above its successors, its multiplayer did everything right. Even when compared to the standards of modern FPS titles, it still holds up and even feels better than most.

The lack of things that more recent Black Ops entries have, such as tactical sprint and numerous weapon skins, allowed the original game's multiplayer to be simpler yet more engaging due to how well-balanced its other aspects were. Everything from its movement to gun handling felt right, which is amazing given that this was Black Ops' first go at it. Much like my stance about its campaign mode, I would say that it had the best Call of Duty multiplayer, even better than that of Black Ops 2, which many argue is the best.

There's also no denying that the first entry produced some of the most iconic Call of Duty maps, as I don't know a single veteran of the franchise who's clueless about Nuketown, Firing Range, etc. Not only are they very popular and memorable, but they're also well-designed, which is why many advocate for them to return in future games.

Even after dabbling with the other entries, I can confidently say that the first Call of Duty: Black Ops is the best. I don't see the seventh game dethroning it at all, even with its innovations and becoming more streamlined, which goes to show how well-made the original game is despite its age. Give it a try if you can, even if it's only to see where the Black Ops journey started.
