  • Quick Answer: Marathon is a bold PvPvE reimagining of the 90s classic, launching March 2026, trading traditional single-player campaigns for high-stakes, extraction-based multiplayer gameplay on Tau Ceti IV.

The living, breathing – or rather dying, drowning – world of Tau Ceti IV is returning after a 30-year absence for an official reboot in 2026. Marathon will release on March 5th, 2026, as a first-person PvPvE extraction shooter as you loot, shoot, and scoot out of the planet in solos, duos, or trios.

Its mixed reception, however, has taken center stage, despite the franchise's revival and Tau Ceti's updated look. These complaints usually paint Marathon’s reboot as DOA, expecting it to become a one-day wonder come launch, only to be dropped, forgotten, and swept under the cosmic rug.

In my mildest opinion, I take these takes with a grain of salt with a side of whiny, if you know what I mean. Usually driven by hate-watching, most Marathon haters are looking for any thread that can be pulled in the instant failure narrative – well, I actually think otherwise.

While less lore-focused gameplay definitely is a step away from the original Marathon direction, this multiplayer approach is not a bad attempt at keeping the universe built in the original 90s trilogy alive through nods and tips of the hat throughout communal experience.

The genre shift from single-player was necessary given today's gaming landscape, where solo campaigns are harder to pick up for less popular titles. Whilst Marathon fans feel a continuation is owed after the long hiatus, the game’s transition to multiplayer builds on the previous work as its foundation.

The way the extraction shooter genre works perfectly in Tau Ceti’s context, considering the loss of the colony during the events of the first game, as the remains of the Marathon ship get pillaged in the current timeline, is just a lovely coincidence and a brilliant find by the creative team.

Besides, it's way safer to go for a competitive shooter than a story-driven game, as any wrong turn in writing can override decades’ worth of immersion and devotion from Marathon fans, whilst this new installment protects the past as it aims for the franchise's future.

Another controversial aspect for many is the visual style chosen for the reboot. Although you can’t please everyone, I certainly love the gory, unsettling vibes that place the new Marathon aesthetic right in the nooks and crannies of the uncanny valley – that’s where I think that’s where sci-fi really thrives.

Other angles trying to shoot the Marathon hype ship down are the plagiarism-riddled development and Destiny 2 trust and abandonment issues, which definitely stain what could’ve been a squeaky-clean rebirth.

Of course, sweeping the rug under a loyal player base and carelessly publishing unauthorized work are two of the biggest no-no’s in the gaming industry. I can’t wrap my head around lambasting an unreleased title that sounds fun, looks fun, and should play fun come beta testing.

I’m not here to change your mind, I’m here to share mine. I know my measuring stick will be how much fun it is to run it with the buds. Now, it feels like rollouts are insufferable with a million mercenary takes on everything but the fun part.

Comp, balance, aesthetics, shop, loading times, server issues, graphics, progression, AI. Video game development and enjoyment feel more and more like rocket science for devs and gamers alike. We don’t let games stand on their two alien feet anymore. Even if it does end up sucking, I think we could all use a brief trip to outer space to touch intergalactic grass. See you in Tau Ceti, maybe?
