The Lore Origin of Minecraft Zombies: A Horror Fantasy Theory

Minecraft and Zombies are synonymous with one another, and we don’t give it much second thought anymore. Its fantastical world, filled with endless possibilities, is riddled with horror creatures that can enter your home and sweep entire towns, all in the name of brains.

Their iconic look and hideous grunt are embedded into every miner's and crafter's memory until the world’s end, but where exactly do Zombies come from? To begin, we have to first categorize these mobs into the Zombie spectrum.

Our green friends enter the Shambler category: the regular, slow Zombie that limps, creeps, and walks to its victims. Some could argue that their AI path-finding abilities would also categorize them as Smart Zombies, but I’ll attribute this behavior to instinct rather than wit.

Adjacent titles have dabbled in zombie-spawning activities rather than the game’s engine producing them out of thin air. Most of the time, Zombies are brought back to half-life by sorcerers using bad mojo, but we can’t discard parasite forces just yet.

If so, how can we explain Villager infections? We know that Zombie Villagers are cured using a Splash Potion of Weakness and a Golden Apple, but this has no effect on regular hostile Zombies. This would trap Minecraft Zombies in the following boxes:

  1. Magic-powered
  2. Instinct-driven
  3. Can infect others
  4. Can’t be cured

What explanation could fit all of these? The biggest fan theory is that the game’s blocky characters make it feel natural: zombies are former miners and crafters. But if we, the players, are the Zombies spawned every single Minecraft night, then shouldn’t our death location have a Zombie roaming around, or at least a similar body model?

Even then, whose magic is constantly bringing players back to life only to torment one another? The only plausible villain behind all this evil is Woodland Mansions’ own Evoker. Illagers are known for invading, conquering, and taking over entire villages, and won’t stop at dark magic to do so.

The powerful wizard shows up in raids to terrorize players, casting spells, spawning barriers, and summoning sword-wielding Vexes all in the name of Illagers. His purpose? To take everything from players, including their lives.

The only lore-accurate explanation that fits all four previous characteristics is that Zombies are magically revived by Evokers, but cannot be controlled. This undead nature brings a dead body back into our realm in a horrific state that can be infectious to healthy humans, like the infected Villagers.

This would turn the Splash Potion and Golden Apple into home remedies and medieval equivalents of medicine rather than magical solutions to magical problems. So there we have it, magicians whose powers can create an undead army, but cannot lead it. These former players remain so will-powered that not even a second chance at life breaks them.

Until officially explained through in-game lore, I’m satisfied with this origin explanation. Though I find it very ironic, not even Zombies can escape modern existentialism. Let us not go into Baby Zombie territory with one, alright. Who even came up with that mob? Yikes.
