With Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater releasing in just a few hours, players are excited to see what the future holds for the series now that Konami has found new hope for bringing the franchise back to the mainstream. Even without Hideo Kojima, the creator of Metal Gear Solid, Konami may still have a trick up its sleeve to continue the series’ legacy.

The question is, would it still be a true Metal Gear Solid game without Snake?

Naked Snake, Big Boss, Venom Snake, and all the other variations have been the focal point of every Metal Gear Solid title. Kojima’s obsession with Escape from New York’s Snake Plissken manifested in this character, and David Hayter (later followed by Kiefer Sutherland in The Phantom Pain) brought Kojima’s vision to life, with voice acting perfectly embodying Snake.

There are plenty of side characters in the Metal Gear Solid universe who deserve their own standalone adventures. Eli, for example, still has loose ends we have been eager to see resolved after his story was cut short in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Better yet, we could even gain more insight into the Philosophers by playing as one of them. Konami could even approach Kojima for plot details and compensate him for his input, assuming their working relationship is still intact.

Long before his untimely removal from Konami, Hideo Kojima had future plans for the series should Snake’s story ever end. One of his ideas included a World War II setting starring not Big Boss, but The Boss herself during the Normandy landings alongside her Cobra Unit. That would be an incredible sight, and Konami wouldn’t struggle too much to develop it, considering The Boss and Snake share similar movesets. It would also be fascinating to see the Cobra Unit in its prime before it eventually fell into the hands of Snake. Perhaps they could even appear as side characters or backup, similar to how Kojima handled Quiet in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

Or, maybe Konami could go for something entirely new. How about a Metal Gear Solid game featuring an original character? That would truly shake things up. Maybe it could focus on someone who lived during Snake’s era and carried on his legacy as both soldier and leader. The possibilities are endless, though the writing team would need to work hard to match the quality of the original series.

Metal Gear Solid Without Snake Is Possible

Could Eva be a good protagonist?

Personally, Metal Gear Solid is not entirely about Snake, and the series has been moving in that direction for years. While Snake may have been central to the story, the franchise has always been about more than him. At its core, it is about Metal Gears, wars, politics, and espionage. Even Raiden proved his worth in Revengeance, which turned out to be a fantastic spin-off about slicing watermelons and blasting heavy metal music, to an extent.

As long as Konami keeps the political themes relevant (and somewhat prophetic), a new Metal Gear Solid could work. It is a long shot, but if done well, the franchise could continue without Kojima and Solid Snake, avoiding another situation like Metal Gear Survive.

For now, though, we can enjoy the Delta remakes and the upcoming Vol. 2 of the Metal Gear Solid Collection.
