Want to know which are the best characters in Destiny: Rising that you need to pull for? Fret not, after spending some time with NetEase’s looter shooter spin-off of Bungie’s iconic IP, I’ve got you covered.

Destiny: Rising, at its core, is a gacha game. That means characters have specific abilities and access to exclusive weapons that will allow you to craft different builds. Similar to popular titles like Genshin Impact or Zenless Zone Zero from HoYoverse, Destiny: Rising is all about making your characters stronger, with all of them serving a purpose depending on their abilities (are they defensive or offensive oriented) plus the type of elemental damage they inflict (Void, Solar, or Arc).

With all that in mind, in this guide, I’ll tell you which are the best characters you should be looking for in Destiny: Rising. This guide is valid for the initial launch period, but I’ll be updating it as more banners become available.

Character Tier List in Destiny: Rising

The best characters in Destiny: Rising are Tan-2, Jolder, Ning Fei, Gwynn, and Attal. I’ll do a quick rundown of why I think each deserves a spot on this list, but stay tuned for more in-depth guides.

While it’s not strictly a tier list, I’ll simply focus on what I consider the best Guardians to have rather than a full list of each of them. One thing I’d like to mention is that the power creep isn’t as big yet, meaning if your favorite didn’t make the cut, then you’ll still be able to enjoy all of the activities Destiny: Rising has to offer.

Tan-2

  • Elemental damage: Solar
  • Primary weapon: Scout Rifle
  • Power weapon: Sniper Rifle
  • Relic: Parhelion Wing

Destiny 2 will immediately notice what makes Tan-2 perhaps the best Guardian in Destiny: Rising. He’s a Scout and Sniper Rifle user, meaning you’re best deploying him as a mid to long-range character. His best asset is his relic, which essentially gives him access to the Warlock Solar class, and that means one thing: Well of Radiance.

In this game, it’s actually called Blessing of Dawn, but it functions exactly the same, making allies that step into it nearly immortal for a few seconds. Tan also has access to both healing and damage-dealing grenades that apply the Scorch debuff. What’s even better is that he can seamlessly change from Duskstar (offensive) to Dawnstar (defensive) abilities in the heat of battle

Jolder

  • Elemental damage: Void
  • Primary weapon: SMGs
  • Power weapon: Swords
  • Relic: Ursa Major
  • Role: Defense
  • How to get: The Rising Lights permanent banner

As the only Mythic Defensive character, Jolder has some serious abilities to prevent your fireteam from certain doom. Unlike Tan-2, she’s less versatile, but her defensive utility is incredibly strong. Her super, Barrier of Starlight, creates a Void bubble around teammates that protects against incoming damage while letting your team shoot through it.

Ning Fei

  • Elemental damage: Arc
  • Primary weapon: SMGs
  • Power weapon: Auto Crossbow
  • Relic: Leigong
  • Role: Offense
  • How to get: The Rising Lights permanent banner

An offensive Arc-based Hunter, Ning Fei is nimble and incredibly fun to use. Offense Guardians don’t provide too much utility for their teams, but they make up for it with strong firepower. His super, Arts of Staff, can wipe entire hordes of enemies swiftly. He also has some neat self-healing potential with his Sidetrick ability, which lets Ning Fei cast a clone that constantly launches chain lightning that heals Ning Fei every time it deals damage.

Gwynn

  • Elemental damage: Void
  • Primary weapon: Sidearm
  • Power weapon: Shotgun
  • Relic: Verdict
  • Role: Offense
  • How to get: Memento Mori limited banner

We have a whole guide dedicated to Gwynn, so do check it out. In short, she’s perhaps the most fun character to play in the game. Her Void Dance is an AoE attack that also heals her, meaning she can be in the thick of combat consistently. This, paired with her Energy Severance ability, which grants her 1 Void Spirit every time she defeats an enemy, buffing Void Dance, makes Gwynn almost unkillable at times. Her Super, Soul Harvest gives her a total of 6 immediately, making sure Gwynn is an incredibly self-sustainable and high-damaging offense character.

Attal

  • Elemental damage: Arc
  • Primary weapon: Hand Cannon
  • Power weapon: Linear Fusion Rifle
  • Relic: Mint Role: Defense
  • How to get: Memento Mori and The Rising Lights permanent banner

The only Legendary Guardian on this list, she has some solid healing capabilities. Considering she’s relatively easy to get, Attal is a very serviceable Guardian. Her super is just solid, helping her clear adds, but Attal’s true value comes from her passive ability: Delightful Companion, which grants her Mint’s Joy for six seconds each time she casts an ability. This lets her heal an ally 50HP per second, granting them 10% acceleration. Plus, her Mint Mend is a direct heal, meaning you can pair the Mint’s Joy buff and the Mind Mend ability to save a critically injured ally.
