Pokemon Legends: Z-A is set to undergo some huge changes soon with its upcoming Mega Dimensions DLC. While it was originally scheduled to arrive in early 2026, it was instead moved to December 10, 2025, much to the delight of fans.

The DLC aims to bring a wealth of content to make the game even more enjoyable, including new Hyperspace areas to explore, Mega Evolutions for certain Pokemon, and characters to interact with. However, among the additions, one upcoming change stood out that caught the eye of many: the level cap being increased.

This will be a first for the Pokemon franchise, as every other game prior has always adhered to the tradition of the maximum level being at 100. While there's no telling what the new number will be, the Mega Dimensions DLC will finally allow players to go past that, with the likely limit being 200.

For now, it seems that the increased level cap will only be limited to the new Hyperspace areas to take on the hyper-strong Pokemon that inhabit them. There is a possibility that future games could adapt to go beyond level 100, but I believe that shouldn't be the case.

The increased level cap should remain limited to the Pokemon Legends: Z-A and its DLC, as allowing it elsewhere could create serious balancing issues. For one, if players can naturally raise their Pokemon to such absurd heights, it would mean Nintendo and Game Freak updating every single one to ensure that their stats scale properly and that they learn new moves to accompany the new levels that can be reached.

Given the many new and old Pokemon that need to be reworked in a single game, there is always the likelihood of some becoming too overpowered due to mismanagement. This would result in matches between players being flooded with only those that are deemed broken due to the unintentional power-up received, which can lead to them being repetitive and not fun to play.

Additionally, having an increased level cap outside of the Hyperspace areas will just make leveling up feel more like a chore than something to look forward to. In Pokemon Legends Z-A, getting to level 100 can already be taxing, even with things like Exp. Candies and shared experience. If the increased limit were ever incorporated into the regular parts of the game, it would mean even more work, which can just be tedious.

The Mega Dimensions DLC at least somewhat handles it well, given that it seems attaining additional levels can only be done via the new Donut mechanic, which only requires berries, but even that already seems like a chore. Therefore, if future games were to adopt the new level cap and require players to reach it naturally through winning battles or using specific items, it would merely lead to a lengthy and unnecessary grind that many would not enjoy.

With all that said, the new level cap should only stay in the Hyperspace areas of Pokemon Legends Z-A and its Mega Dimensions DLC. If it goes anywhere else, such as the upcoming generation 10 mainline entry, it could spell disaster for both the game and the franchise if not handled well.
