Pokemon Legends: Z-A continues to look like a promising spinoff for this franchise, with a focus on real-time battles. Recent gameplay showcases have also impressed fans, as they were able to see these unique battles in action. With fans now wanting Game Freak to take their time with new mainline entries, Legends: Z-A looks like it will give players a good enough time before that next entry comes.

Because this is a spinoff that takes place in one city, most fans are expecting a smaller Pokedex like in Legends: Arceus. While this is disappointing to some players who want all of their favorite creatures in one game, I personally think the smaller number of creatures is a good idea. After all, this isn’t a mainline entry, and this game mostly wants players to battle.

Actually Catching Them All

Many fans enjoyed how Pokemon Legends: Arceus focused on completing the Pokedex, with the smaller number of creatures making this feat more plausible. Sure, there are some creatures that are really hard to catch, but most players will be able to 100% the Pokedex if they’re patient and determined enough.

Keeping that small number in Pokemon Legends: Z-A is essential, as this entry focuses on the new real-time battles.

Having fewer Pokemon to catch means it will be easier to form your teams and determine which creature is best against a certain type. While not having a certain favorite will demoralize some, other players will take this as an opportunity to find new favorites to use. That’s also what a lot of players did with Arceus, which is one of the reasons why people love this game so much.

Save It for the Main Event

One other reason Game Freak should keep the creature count low in Pokemon Legends: Z-A is so the main games can keep the proper “catch ‘em all” identity of the series. While Arceus did a good job of keeping the formula fresh, it was able to avoid having all the creatures. In hindsight, that was a godsend, because players often had to re-catch Pokemon in order to get specific traits from them for the Pokedex.

The point stands; Game Freak should save catching them all for mainline titles. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet capitalized on this fairly well, as the DLC allowed players to catch some rare critters. Bulbasaur was in the DLC, and that’s enough to make it a worthwhile venture for these hardcore Pokemon fans.

Pokemon Legends: Z-A will likely keep that smaller Pokedex, and that’s a good thing. The engaging real-time battles should be enough to keep players busy. Mega Evolutions will also make plenty of gamers happy, since they’re officially old enough to be nostalgic for 3DS titles.
