Pokemon Legends: Z-A looks like the most exciting release in this series since Arceus, giving fans a new real-time battle system to mess with. It’s been a while since we’ve had a game in this series primarily focused on battles, and we’re interested to see how the JRPG fares on a Switch 2 and an original Switch.
The game doesn’t come out until October, but some previews have been released, teasing fans with some exciting details. It’s a huge departure from Arceus, though some mechanics from that spinoff did make it to this installment. With nostalgia for Pokemon X and Y at an all-time high, we think this entry is going to make plenty of fans happy.
Stealth Attacks? In a Pokemon Game?
NintendoLife confirmed that players will be able to gain advantages through stealth attacks in Pokemon Legends: Z-A. In the Z-A Battle Royal portion of the game, players are required to beat other trainers and rank up for this tournament. Because this is a dynamic tournament that takes place all over the city, you can hide and attack the opponent’s Pokemon to get an advantage.
Mechanics like this freshen up the series’ addictive battle system, and we’re sure the real-time movement will add more strategy to proceedings. Said battle system is also faster-paced, as players and their Pokemon will move in real-time, as they look for an opening. Trainers will bring up a HUD and choose an attack for their Pokemon via a button combination, eliminating the old turn-based combat in a way that still respects it.
Mega Evolutions Sound Familiar…
In the second part of this demo, players are forced into a battle against a wild Absol that could Mega Evolve. This essentially acts as a tutorial for Pokémon in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, with a Lucario joining the player in this section. Based on VGC’s description of the fight, this feels a lot like the Frenzied Pokemon fights in Arceus.

Rather than throw its favorite food at the Pokemon, players have to use Lucario’s attacks to make the Absol drop balls of energy for Mega Evolution. Once they absorb enough energy, they can now Mega Evolve. This is a neat spin to the mechanic, and one that should make battles feel competitive, even if its against NPCs.
