New details about Pokemon Champions were revealed after this year’s World Championships. As many expected, this new home for competitive battling is coming to Switch 2, in addition to Switch and mobile devices. That news was more expected than surprising, so the confirmation was good for the players’ peace of mind.
Interestingly, a press release for the game has confirmed that a paid version will be available in addition to the free-to-play model. It’s the first time we’re hearing of this paid version, leaving us wondering what will make this premium purchase stand out.
Realistically, this version of Pokemon Champions is going to include plenty of in-game currency and some premium monsters for a hot start. Optimistically, some fans, including me, are hoping there’s some kind of single-player mode as well.
Champions Story Mode?
At the time of writing, Champions has only been confirmed as a competitive multiplayer game with in-game purchases. The game won’t force players to spend money, but we’re sure some will be tempted to get specific creatures. Regardless, since there is going to be a paid version of the game, having some kind of optional single-player campaign would be appreciated.
Both the Pokemon Colosseum games on GameCube had extensive single-player modes. The Pokemon Stadium titles on Nintendo 64 also had offline battles and tournaments, to give lonesome trainers something to do. Since Pokemon Champions is essentially a successor to these games, having some kind of campaign would be appreciated.
Pros Only?
Despite some fans wanting a single-player mode for this game, they should keep in mind that this is a freemium title being made for hardcore fans. This online battler is for fans who care about secret stats and Pokemon nature affecting their stats. Even though some of these features have been simplified in Champions, it’s still telling how this game is designed for them.

While we’re sure these kinds of players still want a single-player campaign in the game, this focus does lessen the possibility. If they want a campaign, games like Scarlet, Violet, and Legends: Z-A will be available for a long time. The Pokemon Company is also probably making their next big game, which will tie in with an anime and merchandise, because that’s this series’ cycle.
Having some kind of campaign for Pokemon Champions would be appreciated, as that will get more eyes on this competitive title. But the game is clearly being made for a competitive and niche audience, which is cool to see. We’re not expecting a single-player mode, but it would be nice if the devs surprised us.
