Overwatch 2’s Hero 45 has officially been revealed, and she’s going to be a deadly new addition that will destabilize the ever-shifting meta of Blizzard’s competitive hero-shooter.

Vendetta makes her debut in Overwatch 2 in the upcoming Season 20, which begins on December 9, 2025. A hero trial will kick off this November 26, allowing players to try out her skills before her official launch. While others are excited to see her appearance and how she will bring her giant sword into the field, others are making fun of her character design.

It was only months ago that Blizzard announced that they’ll be toning down their ‘oddball’ character designs in future seasons in favor of marketable, attractive characters. We’ve already had the first taste of their new approach to designs with Wuyang, a fairly toned support character with a Bo staff. He’s not a bad design, though fans were expecting to see weirder styles like the long-rumored Jetpack Cat.

Now, Vendetta’s release has sparked another wave of character design discourse. Only this time, it’s purely built for giggles. Overwatch 2 fans all over X have joined in on the “How [Overwatch Character] Would Look Like If He Came Out in 2025” trend. We see characters like Roadhog’s design reworked with less stomach to fit Blizzard’s new philosophy; others, like a Junkrat redesign, have gone off the rails with dirt on his face and barely any burn marks.

Vendetta, meanwhile, had some players questioning her design choice for being too “safe.” Gone are the bizarre, gonzo characters like Hammond the hamster or Winston the gorilla. These new hero designs are another set of attractive humanoids, similar to Juno and Wuyang.

Some of the comments even highlight that we would never get heroes like Torbjorn or D.Va in this era of Overwatch 2. Both characters offered unique designs that added flavor to the Game of the Year-winning hero-shooter. Now, it seems like the new designs are built purely to market Overwatch’s growing selection of cosmetics.

Cosmetics have been Overwatch 2’s most profitable in-game purchase, and heroes like Mercy, Kiriko, and Juno are some of the designer’s favorite characters to spruce up with. Oddball characters like Zarya, Hammond, and even Lucio don’t get as many legendary cosmetics and crossover skins compared to the big three. This caused another round of cosmetic distribution discourse all over the game’s communities, including the Overwatch Subreddit and Blizzard Forums.

Vendetta's design discourse.

It seems like this really is Blizzard’s priority moving forward. These ‘safe’ characters are a slow investment to market new skins that don’t take a lot of work to redecorate. We’ve already seen our fair share of skin influx in the game with Juno and Kiriko, plus with characters like Vendetta, a humanoid, it’s easy for Blizzard to tweak out new costumes to sell.

There’s nothing wrong with that, really. Blizzard still has plans for weirder heroes in the future, but these ‘safe’ ones just aren’t as memorable as the original roster of heroes in Overwatch’s history.

So it all makes sense that the community is having fun with this issue.
