New Episodic Game Dispatch Revives the Iconic Telltale Episodic Formula with a Superhero Twist

Good news for fans of Telltale Games, there’s a new episodic game coming to the market.

Dispatch is a brand new entry from the writers and directors behind the hit Telltale Games Tales from the Borderlands and The Wolf Among Us. It’s a workplace comedy featuring a dysfunctional group of superheroes.

You assume the role of Robert, a ‘benched’ superhero known as Mechaman. After he lost his mecha-suit in battle, he’s relegated to an office position at the SDN. Now he’s doing a menial office job handling emergency calls that handles any superhero business.

Aaron Paul voices the main character Robert.

If you’ve seen hit shows like The Office and its sequel, The Paper, the dynamics are exactly similar, but more on the superhero side of things. Fans of Amazon’s TV Show The Boys or Invincible will also see some similarities to how it takes a mature spin on the superhero genre, as characters aren’t all goody-two-shoes and more on the gray area when it comes to their personalities.

Dispatch’s unique spin to its ‘choices matter gameplay’ is how it adds a touch of Strategy into it. Apart from making decisions that other major characters will remember in later episodes, Dispatch’s gameplay loop involves answering 911 calls from regular citizens in their town. As a superhero dispatcher, you’re going to have to pick from a chosen team of probationary heroes a la DC’s Suicide Squad and task them to do some crime fighting or any random activity that requires superhero aid.

Send a band of misfits to aid local emergencies.

You're gonna have to balance who to dispatch depending on the severity of the emergency. Tasks like helping a kid retrieve his missing balloon will involve sending out a flying hero like Sonar, or missions like stopping thieves will need the aid of more talented heroes like Invisigal and Flambae. There's a lot of management work here and you're going to plan ahead before sending these heroes to situations they don't fit in, otherwise the chances of it failing is bigger, which results in hero injuries.

Dispatch’s demo is available now and you can get a taste on how its gameplay loop works. You can also get to see the game’s interesting cast of characters with voice talent from iconic actors like Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul (as Robert) and Westworld's Jeffrey Wright as Chase. Other voice talents include celebrities like MoistCr1tikal, Jacksepticeye, Alanah Pearce and Laura Bailey.

You can upgrade these heroes if you do a good job.

It’s one of the most unique gaming experiences I’ve played in a long time. As a sucker for games that go beyond the usual formula of going from point A to point B, Dispatch’s novel setup is already making me excited for the full release.

The game officially arrives this October 22nd for PlayStation 5 and Steam. Its price isn't too bad either. For a $30 product, you already get the full 8-episode season with two episodes coming out every week. Players who prefer the $40 Deluxe version will get an extra Digital Artbook and four Digital Comics.

It’s safe to say that Dispatch has a lot of potential that will satiate fans of the episodic choice-based genre. After years of barely having any game like it, the developers AdHoc Studio finally makes a game that rekindles the spirit of the Telltale Game’s formula, all while adding their own superhero spin to it.
