The highly anticipated The Wolf Among Us sequel was announced way back in 2019, and avid fans, like me, have been waiting on the sidelines with bated breath for the game to come out.

It is now 5 years later, and my face has turned a vivid Thanos purple, still waiting for any sign of a release date from Telltale Games. Telltale has confirmed that the game is still in development hell, but that opens up even more questions. So, what the heck is going on?!

Background

If you don’t know what The Wolf Among Us is, then, honestly, I don’t blame you. The game came out in 2013, just as Telltale Games was at the peak of its popularity. Telltale’s The Walking Dead was just released to amazing reviews from players and critics alike, but there were concerns that this was going to be the one-hit wonder of their studio. Those fears were silenced as soon as TWAU came around.

The Wolf Among Us is a narrative fantasy game that places you in a world inspired by the Fables comics, where all our favorite fairytale characters are brought into the modern world, but just not with the happy fairytale ending we all had in mind. The characters are gritty and their lives are bleak, all of which you witness through the eyes of Detective Bigby, the big bad wolf. Of course, this is a narrative-heavy game, and the further I go on about it, the closer we get to spoiler territory. All you have to know is that this is some of the best worldbuilding I’ve seen in the game, and all the characters are layered, and the choices actually matter.

But now you may be wondering, if it’s so good, then where’s The Wolf Among Us 2?

Signs of Life

Way back in December 2024, Telltale came out to say the game was still in development and that plans for its release were still in place. This was good news because, for the longest time, fans thought that the game was dead in the water. Sure, there was the reveal trailer 3 years ago, but there have been games in the past that were close to completion but were ultimately left on the cutting room floor. Personally, I won’t stop being antsy until I see the Pre-order page option.

Months since this announcement, there has been nothing but radio silence. If that wasn’t enough to make you worried about the state of the game, then you should also know that AdHoc Studios, the studio that originally wrote The Wolf Among Us 2, also just recently came out to say that they have no idea what’s going on with the game. This is news that you don’t want to hear, and news that made us fans worry even more about the state of the game. Thankfully, there is still some hope.

While Telltale has been quiet over the past few months, that won’t stop the rumor mill from spinning. Aside from the new screenshots, an actual cover photo, and a website page update including an Epic Games Store wishlist button, there are rumors of a huge announcement from Telltale any time this October, specifically for The Wolf Among Us fans. So if you were thinking of replaying The Wolf Among Us, now is the best time to do it.

Why You Should Replay

Telltale has always scratched an itch in my brain that hasn’t been scratched in a long time, and that is the need for a stylistic, narrative-focused game. Sure, there have been games like Disco Elysium and the upcoming Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet by Naughty Dog that‘s sure to deliver a solid story, but I believe only Telltale Games can produce the perfect formula. I believe that Telltale’s narrative and branching story paths that last from one chapter to another really hit home the finality of every decision I make, and I’m someone who always wants to know what would have happened if I chose a different option.

But admittedly, as good as the story was, a decade away from the game’s story has left a few holes in the narrative for me. I remember the excruciating decisions I had to make at the end of the game, but I completely forgot about the amazing journey I had to go through to get my ending. And let’s not forget about the fact that there are multiple endings to this masterpiece, so now may be the perfect time to check if I’d still make the same decisions I made before.

All in all, whether or not we get news this October, I will be replaying The Wolf Among Us. This is an amazing game that’s worth revisiting not just with hopes for a sequel, but because the game, the atmosphere, and the art style are just so good. Heck, I’d gladly wait a decade more if we get to continue Detective Bigby’s story, but fingers crossed, hoping it never comes to that.
