Monster Hunter Wilds' Latest Update Feels Like Master Rank Already (And It's Great!)

The latest Monster Hunter Wilds update has added some beefy new content for all players, and the first thing anyone would notice is that monsters are getting much harder, with potential one-shot moves.

Players are already wondering if this is Capcom’s intended difficulty for the base Wilds experience or a precursor to the highly anticipated Master Rank or G-Rank expected to arrive with the game’s expansion.

With Version 1.021 now out in the wild, Monster Hunter Wilds’ difficulty has been ramped up significantly. The dreaded High Rank monsters, including the Apexes, as well as Lagiacrus, Seregios, and Mizutsune, now have more health and hit harder than ever before. Lower-rank monsters will receive similar treatment in future updates, so monsters like the Ajarakan and even the Chatacabra will become much tougher in the coming months.

Difficult monsters in Wilds.

The difficulty spike ties directly into the game’s new Talisman system, an endgame feature similar to Monster Hunter Rise’s version. In Wilds, Talismans have a randomly generated skill revealed once appraised, and hunting the harder 9-Star monsters will always guarantee a Talisman drop.

Some players are enjoying this increase in difficulty, as monster hunts now last longer than the quick sub-10-minute quests. The tougher tier monsters often take more than 10 minutes, sometimes even 20, depending on how optimized your damage output is. This feels on par with the G-Rank or Master Rank expansions of past titles, such as Monster Hunter World’s Iceborne or Rise’s Sunbreak.

Arkveld and Rey Dau are now harder to slay in the new update.

Naturally, this raises the question: if the base game already feels like a Master Rank experience, what awaits when the true expansion arrives next year? Capcom has already shown that simply increasing monster health and offensive power can significantly change the game’s pace. If a genuine Master Rank expansion is coming, the difficulty could spike even further.

Players are already dreading the thought of facing a 9-Star Gore Magala with blazing-fast moves and punishing Frenzy attacks.

For hunters craving a tougher challenge, this is good news. The game has been called “easy” by many, even newcomers to the franchise. If this is the first taste of Capcom’s new approach to difficulty, the expansion could push the challenge to an entirely new level.
