Marvel Rivals’ New Proficiency System Just Made Lord Icons Meaningless

Marvel Rivals’ Season 6 brought a ton of new features to the game, including the long-awaited Deadpool. With his complex kit and unpredictable synergies, he’s shaping up to be Rivals’ deadliest hero. But apart from the Merc-with-a-Mouth, Rivals has also changed the way its hero proficiencies work, and some people aren’t happy about it.

When Season 6 dropped, the game’s proficiency system had drastically changed. Lord Icons are no longer the top of the food chain, rendering the old “my avatar icon is better than yours” flex completely meaningless. The latest update of NetEase’s hero-shooter has just expanded the system with far better rewards like Unstable Molecules, Credits, and an animated version of the previous Lord icons.

Some players aren’t happy with it because it effectively rebooted everyone’s progress, making its once-shiny Lord Icons lose their luster. In short, they have to grind to reach their maximum ranks again.

Before, players had to constantly play their favorite hero to achieve the coveted “Lord Icon.” In essence, they’re considered the highest level for a character’s proficiency. Say, you play a lot of Magneto. Once you reach maximum proficiency with him, you receive a stylish new icon for your avatar. They’re purely for cosmetic purposes, as well as bragging rights that you’ve probably spent more than a hundred hours with him.

Apart from the renewed grind, players also find that to achieve the maximum rank on the new proficiency system, which is level 70, they need to rack up over 62,000 Lord Points. And getting them is no easy feat. This increases the overall length a player would have to use their character to achieve the new and improved Lord icon. As of the moment, the most common animated Lords found are Cloak & Dagger and Rocket Raccoon. The rest, like Magneto and Doctor Strange, are still using their usual default Lords.

While the new proficiency system is far more grindy, it also encourages players to keep playing their best heroes. The new update effectively ended “Lord farming,” a cheeky way to gain proficiency experience by jumping into Quick Play and Doom Matches for easy points without entering a real match, just to flaunt a hero’s Lord icon. With the update overhauling the system, those “Lord farmers” are no longer as high and mighty as they once were.

Since Rivals’ release a year ago, its proficiency system hasn’t been particularly effective. It only emboldened said “Lord farmers” and diluted the overall proficiency system of the game. With the new update, this makes things far more interesting as the good players are now highlighted, whereas those who took shortcuts are no longer as respected.
