Marvel Rivals Getting a PvE Mode Is Great, but It’s Not What the Game Needs

Marvel Rivals is a great shooter, but as the months have passed since its initial release, the game's popularity has certainly waned. If it wants to remain relevant, it needs to do something to satisfy its current fans while bringing in new ones.

NetEase Games understands this, so it decided that one of the best ways to keep Marvel Rivals alive is by introducing a brand-new PvE mode inspired by the Marvel Zombies series. It's expected to be playable on October 23 and has certainly caught the attention of many, as it provides an alternate way to enjoy the game aside from the standard 6v6 matches.

While a mode that lets players work together instead of against each other is great, it is not what Marvel Rivals needs at the moment. What the game truly deserves is more variety in its character choices, something it should have had since day one.

A hero shooter should have a diverse roster, one that allows players to create teams with different possible combinations, making matches unpredictable and exciting. Marvel Rivals somewhat has that, but due to the number of Duelist characters vastly outnumbering that of Strategists and Vanguards, there isn't much in terms of match variety.

It's because that one role has so many characters that you often see teams consisting of players who would rather pick them over those that provide coverage or support. This ultimately ruins the matchmaking experience for many people, which has likely led to them being driven away from Marvel Rivals and never coming back.

The problem has only gotten worse, as nearly every major update involves the addition of a new Duelist, the latest being Daredevil in the game's fourth season. Marvel Rivals needs more Strategists and Vanguards, and NetEase Games needs to notice that before it's too late.

It's also not just a matter of more character variety, but also in terms of the uniqueness of their abilities. The game did something interesting with the addition of Angela, as she's a flying Vanguard, which was unusual to say the least. While the character wasn't very popular, its moves were different from what you'd expect from a frontlliner, and that offered more strategic value to team compositions.

Marvel Rivals needs more heroes like that, as they can make matches more interesting and fun to play, which incentivizes people to continue playing or draw more newcomers. The game will likely add them in the future, but if it takes too long to happen, there is a good chance that barely anyone will still be around to enjoy them, as many will have likely moved on to a game that provides a better, more varied hero shooter experience.

The addition of a Marvel Zombies PvE mode seems like a distraction from working on what the game truly needs, and in turn has left me disappointed. It's still something to look forward to, but it won't have the same impact on the game's longevity that new and unique heroes would have had.
