Hollow Knight: Silksong is set to release in just a few days, and players are excited to experience the next entry in Team Cherry’s beloved metroidvania series. After nearly seven years in development, the world is finally ready to step into Hornet’s story. But the question remains among players and the community: is it a sequel or a prequel?

Let’s find out. Spoilers ahead for those who haven’t finished Hollow Knight.

Green... path?

The clearest answer is yes. Hollow Knight: Silksong takes place after the events of the original Hollow Knight. The official Silksong page on Steam and other storefronts describes it as an “epic sequel.”

The premise explains that Hornet, a returning character from the first game, has been captured and taken to an unfamiliar kingdom called Pharloom. Throughout her journey, players take control of her and guide her through the mysteries of this strange land far from her birthplace, which is Hallownest.

Team Cherry has previously stated that Hollow Knight does not have one definitive canon ending. The game has five different endings, but the one constant is that Hornet survives in all of them. If we consider the “Dream No More” ending, it makes the most sense as it resolves the story neatly and leaves The Knight, Hornet, and Hallownest in a better place.

What if Hollow Knight: Silksong is a prequel in disguise?

Ants in Silksong?

Some fans speculate that Team Cherry might pull a twist and make Silksong a prequel. Nobody outside of the developers and Kickstarter backers knows the full narrative yet, but what if this game explores Hornet’s early days after being born to her Dreamer mother and the Pale King?

That kind of reveal would be a shock for fans who have followed the lore for years. It could also give us more insight into Hornet’s character.

Another theory is that our first encounter with Hornet in Greenpath shows a weaker version of her because she had not yet been to Silksong’s kingdom. This might also explain how she obtained an upgrade for her weapon, the Needle and Thread, as it is much more powerful on our second encounter with her on Kingdom's Edge. Even her weapon's name is a curious coincidence, considering Pharloom is a place where silk and song are central themes.

Of course, these could just be fan theories. With so many possible endings in Hollow Knight, it is difficult to pin down what truly connects to Silksong, unless we start pulling out Mr. Mushroom’s cryptic prophecies.

Officially, Silksong is a sequel according to Team Cherry’s description. Still, it is not impossible that the story may contain elements that feel like a prequel. Either way, players are about to experience a fascinating new tale that shines a brighter light on one of the series’ most beloved characters.
