Is Destiny: Rising Canon? A Guide to the Game's Timeline

Destiny Rising

Destiny Rising

Destiny: Rising is officially out for iOS and Android devices. This bold new take on Bungie’s hit science-fiction looter shooter offers a fresh yet familiar experience for both new and returning players. Rising is essentially a mobile game with gacha elements at its core, but it still carries the best parts of the original Destiny, with first-person shooter mechanics, powerful abilities, and an endless loot pool filled with weapon rolls to chase.

With all that in mind, what exactly is Destiny: Rising about? Is it tied to the original game’s lore? Let’s break it down. While you're here, check out all working Destiny: Rising codes!

What is the timeline in Destiny: Rising?

The Traveler in Destiny: Rising.

One of the biggest misconceptions that many players believe is that Destiny: Rising takes place within the Destiny 2 universe. Unfortunately, anyone expecting continuity with Bungie’s lore will be disappointed, as Rising exists in an alternate timeline where our Guardian does not exist and the events of Destiny 2 never happened.

This is NetEase’s way of giving the series a fresh start while keeping the core elements that make its narrative engaging. The Traveler still exists, but not in the Last City. Instead, it hovers over Haven, a small settlement on Earth formed after the second Dark Age following the Collapse.

The story of Rising begins years after the Collapse, where the Black Fleet and its Pyramids, led by Nezarec, raided the Solar System and brought humanity’s Golden Age to an end. However, Rising makes no direct mention of the Black Fleet or Nezarec so far, suggesting that this could be a completely new storyline.

Another big change is the lack of explorable planets. You cannot travel to Nessus, Mars, or Europa. Instead, Rising’s focus for now is on Earth and the ongoing Fallen invasion.

The Protagonist: Wolf

Destiny: Rising's Wolf.

The main protagonist in Destiny: Rising is Wolf, an unknown Lightbearer who catches your Ghost’s attention after it finds your body slumped in a corner. With a look that channels the Iron Lords, Wolf serves as Rising’s version of a ‘main’ character, similar to Zenless Zone Zero’s Proxy or Genshin Impact’s Outlander. Wolf is an all-rounder and the first playable character, with others unlocked later through the gacha system.

For now, Wolf’s abilities are fairly generic. This is by design, as the extended cast, most notably Gwynn, stand out more thanks to their unique designs and abilities. Other characters from Bungie's Destiny 2 also make their appearance here, like Ikora Rey and Iron Lord Jolder, both of which can be unlocked through the game's gacha system.

What Does This Mean for Destiny 2 Players?

Haven in Destiny: Rising

For long-time Destiny 2 players, Rising may actually be refreshing. It offers a clean break from Bungie’s increasingly complex lore. While Destiny 2 is moving forward after defeating the Witness in The Final Shape and setting up new plotlines with The Nine in its latest DLC, Edge of Fate, Rising chooses a different path.

Destiny: Rising gives players a new Lightbearer, a new story, and a familiar yet reimagined Earth to explore.
