Imagine Kirby 64's Copy Fusion in HD: The Potential of a Crystal Shards Remake

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards

Kirby is arguably one of the most popular characters in video game history, and it's not just because of his shape or his cuteness. Throughout the years, he has been involved in providing generations of Nintendo fans with amazing games, which he intends to continue with his next big venture via Kirby Air Riders.

While creating a new title would help continue the legacy of the adorable pink puffball and his franchise, there's also merit in looking back to older entries and remaking them to fit the modern generation. Among the classic games, there is one I think would make for an excellent choice to see again on the Switch and Switch 2: Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards.

Some may ask why this particular game instead of other popular entries like Kirby Super Star Ultra or Kirby Planet Robobot, which I can provide a simple answer for: the Power Combo gimmick. Kirby is known for inhaling enemies and utilizing their abilities, and Power Combos took it a step further by allowing him to combine whatever power he currently has with another.

It is what made Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards so unique, as the gimmick was introduced there and became a huge factor in why many enjoyed the game. Modern fans will likely also have a ton of fun with it should it ever return via an HD remake on the Switch and Switch 2, and the main reason is the different possible combinations to try out.

The original had 28, and each one came with unique animations and effects. One involved Kirby turning into a burning phoenix that would decimate opponents, another allowed him to become an eldritch horror with massive jaws that snapped any enemy out of existence, and the list goes on. They were so interesting and fun to use that players would spend a lot of time going out of their way to see them all.

That's what made the Power Combo so good and memorable, and a remake could make it even better by providing it with more combinations. All Nintendo has to do is update the list of enemies by creating new ones or carrying them over from other games, such as the popular Kirby and the Forgotten Land, subsequently providing new elements to mix.

The increased number of combinations can also lead to updating the level designs to adhere to what players can do with them, which could result in brand new stages and bosses that make the game more fun and challenging. Additionally, it helps that the remake will give the game an HD look, and with all the different combinations and their unique animations, it could make for one of the most stunning-looking Kirby games in the franchise.

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards already had a winning formula that was popular in its time, and an updated version of it is an easy recipe for success. Should Nintendo ever decide to remake one of the classic Kirby entries, I'm hoping they go with the N64 classic, as it just seems like the most obvious choice given its potential.
