I Haven’t Played an FPS in Years, but Battlefield 6 Could Finally Change That

Battlefield 6

Among the many genres of video games, first-person shooters seem to be the one that people can easily get into. I dabbled in it back in the day, as I enjoyed playing titles such as Halo, Call of Duty, Counter-Strike, etc., and I had a wonderful time.

However, somewhere along the line, the genre had taken directions that made me no longer enjoy it, introducing mechanics and features that made it far too overwhelming for a veteran FPS player. I believed that there would be no more reason for me to return to it, that is, until I saw the trailer for Battlefield 6.

DICE and the rest of Battlefield Studios certainly outdid themselves, as the promotional videos for the game caught my eye. It feels like it was made for veteran FPS players in mind, and some of you may wonder how so. One good explanation is that Battlefield 6 clearly portrays the return to the franchise's roots.

As stated before, the first-person shooter genre has taken many directions, and that's a normal thing to do if it wants to evolve and stay relevant. However, doing so has somewhat ostracized old fans like myself, as the newer and flashier aesthetics and gameplay of the modern titles can be too much.

Battlefield 6 looks like it's stepping back from that, with its grittier style reminiscent of past FPS games, and I'm all for it. The trailers have done an excellent job showing that it is, and they also send a clear message that old and new fans can easily get into: there'll be a lot of shooting in places you expect it to happen.

However, perhaps the biggest reason why Battlefield 6 portrays itself as a game for classic FPS fans, and why it makes me want to return to the genre, is how it makes you feel like you're actually going to war. As interesting as modern titles such as the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 are, they don't necessarily do a good job of inducing the excitement expected when heading into large-scale gunfights.

They're more focused on shoving in what they believe are things fans would find cool or relevant, and as a result, they aren't able to capture the essence of the FPS genre. That problem feels non-existent for Battlefield 6, as while it still attempts to look cool with everything it's trying to show, it does so in a more grounded way by focusing more on the realistic expectations of its gameplay.

Battlefield Studios may have created something truly special with Battlefield 6, and it has certainly got me excited enough to return to the genre as a longtime FPS veteran. Although there's no guarantee the game will live up to everything it promises in its trailers, it is at least taking steps and heading in directions that differ from the rest of its competition, which gives me hope.
