So, if you're aiming for the top, you'll need to make sure that you and your team of Pokemon are strong enough to deal with anything that gets in your way, and that means leveling up. To do that, you must gain experience points, and while battling is the primary method for doing so, there is another way that can help speed up the process.
First introduced in Pokemon Sword and Shield, Exp. Candies make a return in the 9th-generation game. They can come in different varieties, and are exactly what you need to skyrocket your team into insanely powerful monsters.
Depending on the size you manage to get, Exp. Candies can grant as few as 100 experience points to as many as 30,000, but any amount is good if it means leveling up faster. The easiest method of acquiring them is by simply running around Lumiose City, as they're part of the list of items that can be found or automatically picked up during exploration. Use them immediately, as it's crucial for obtaining more.
Get your Pokemon strong enough for you to quickly reach the 10th episode of the main mission, as it's where you unlock Quasatico Inc. The building contains an NPC that trades Mega Shards for the powerful Mega Evolution stones and, what you're really after, Exp. Candy S. The latter only requires 8 shards, meaning it's easy to collect a lot all at once and use them to propel your team to levels you weren't meant to have by that point.
Doing so will be necessary, as it's needed to take on a returning staple from Pokemon Legends Arceus: Alpha Pokemon. While they're absurdly powerful and can easily knock out careless trainers, they also provide a lot of experience points and are a method of obtaining additional Exp. Candies.
Normally, you'd want to avoid them until you're further into the game, but since you've been using your candies to level up your team fast, you should have no issues taking them on. Now, all you have to do is fast-travel to the higher-numbered Wild Zones, beat the Alphas that reside in them, level up through the candies and experience they give, and repeat the process.

Waiting for them to respawn won't be an issue, as by the time you finish the ones in a particular Wild Zone, those from the others will have already come back, providing you with a loop that you can easily abuse. Just be sure you have a team with diverse typing, as you'll want to cover every Alpha's weakness to speed up the leveling process.
Game Freak's decision to place Exp. Candies in Pokemon Legends: Z-A make leveling up easier, and the developer made the right call, as some may need it to overcome the game's challenge. Make sure to take advantage of the item if you're having trouble. It's there for a reason.
