There are only two (or three, depending on your timezone) days left before Hollow Knight: Silksong comes out on all major consoles. While we wait for the imminent release of one of the most highly anticipated indie games of the year, let’s take a look back at some of my unforgettable moments in the original Hollow Knight.
Note that I will not include any Pantheon content because it almost broke my sanity. So without further ado, here are my top five unforgettable moments in Hollow Knight:
Fighting Hornet for the First Time

If it isn’t Ms. Silksong herself. The first few hours of Hollow Knight felt like a tutorial, but the real game begins once you enter Greenpath and face Hornet for the first time. This is the game’s first true skill check. Hornet isn’t impossibly hard, but she isn’t easy either. She’s quick, and with Hollow Knight’s contact damage, it was frustrating whenever she got too close.
This was also the first time I saw breadcrumbs of the game’s lore, with Hornet warning the little Knight to tread carefully in this kingdom.
After hours of trial and error and hearing “Shaw!” over and over, I finally beat her. The reward made it worth it: one of the most powerful abilities in the game, the Dash.
City of Tears Ambience

Another highlight for me is entering the game’s first capital, the City of Tears. Where Dirtmouth was a lonely village and the Forgotten Crossroads a remnant of the past, City of Tears was Hallownest’s bustling metropolis where almost anything could happen. It felt like Hollow Knight’s version of Dark Souls' Anor Londo, showing a glimpse of a once-thriving civilization before the fall.
What made it even more special was how the music immediately played as the area’s title appeared on screen. It was a brilliant choice that turned the moment iconic, making me feel like I had discovered an ancient relic of great importance.
Entering the Temple of the Black Egg

Near the end of the game, entering the Temple of the Black Egg is a milestone for anyone who endured the journey from the three Dreamers. It signals that the conclusion is near, and it marks the path toward the game’s final boss inside the mysterious shell.
The fight against the Hollow Knight is more bittersweet than epic. Facing the eponymous character behind one of the best games ever made, I found not a mighty foe but a broken vessel tearing itself apart, screaming for release. The moment felt tragic and heavy, as if the Hollow Knight just wanted it all to end.

The White Palace Torture Chamber

Awakening the Dream Nail for the first time and entering the White Palace was a decision I regret deeply. What I expected to be a majestic home of Hallownest’s legends turned out to be a nightmare filled with buzzsaws and metallic spikes.
The White Palace is a platforming torture chamber, like something ripped straight out of Super Meat Boy or Celeste. I spent hours jumping, dashing, and dying repeatedly just to get that elusive piece of White Fragment.
And don’t even get me started on the Path of Pain. I’d rather not talk about it.

Facing the Radiance

Facing a Higher Being means you’re about to push yourself to the limit. Beating the Radiance was one of the most epic moments I had in Hollow Knight. I didn’t expect the game to go really bonkers, having me battle the true embodiment of Light itself.
Challenging the Radiance was a culmination of everything Hollow Knight offered. It required unlocking the Void Heart, awakening the Dream Nail, and plenty of backtracking through Hallownest. So it makes sense I’d be rewarded with one of the game’s hardest boss fights.
When I finally defeated her, it felt like I had truly completed the journey. Only to find out there's still the Pantheon left.
While there are countless other unforgettable moments in Hollow Knight, like fighting Nightmare King Grimm or “accidentally” killing Menderbug for the first time, these five stand out the most for me.
I can’t wait for Silksong’s release to create even more unforgettable memories.
